โœ…What is the Rule Curve?

๐Ÿ”ดA rule curve or rule level specifies the storage or empty space to be maintained in a reservoir during different times of the year.

๐Ÿ”ดHere the implicit assumption is that a reservoir can best satisfy its purposes if the storage levels specified by the rule curve are maintained in the reservoir at different times.

๐Ÿ”ดIt decides the fluctuating storage levels in a reservoir.

๐Ÿ”ดThe gate opening schedule of a dam is based on the rule curve.

๐Ÿ”ดIt is part of the โ€œcore safetyโ€ mechanism in a dam.

๐ŸŽ–
The Supreme Court has warned the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary against the failure to give information on the rule curve for Mullaperiyar dam.

โœ…Project RE-HAB

๐Ÿ”ดProject RE-HAB stands for Reducing Elephant-Human Attacks using Bees. It is an initiative of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC).
๐Ÿ”ดIt intends to create โ€œbee fencesโ€ to thwart elephant attacks in human habitations using honeybees.
๐Ÿ”ดBee boxes have been placed on the ground as well as hung from the trees.
๐Ÿ”ดThe boxes are connected with a string so that when elephants attempt to pass through, a tug causes the bees to swarm the elephant herds and dissuade them from progressing further.
๐Ÿ”ดThis idea stems from the elephantsโ€™ proven fear of the bees.

What is the Osaka Track- G20?

๐Ÿ”ดRelated to E- commerce international rules negotiations

๐Ÿ”ดAims at drafting rules on data flows, removal of prohibitions on data localization, and cloud computing

๐ŸŽ–Result : India, South Africa, and Indonesia have boycotted the โ€œOsaka Track" on the โ€œdigital economy" at the G20 leadersโ€™ summit in Osaka, Japan in 2019- Fear that plurilateral treaties would deny the โ€œpolicy space" for digital-industrialization

โš ๏ธ1998 Work Program on e-commerce - WTO is a better platform to talk about this issue according to India( Global level body- More democracy- includes concerns of poor countries- Better bargaining power)- This was initiated at the Second Ministerial Conference of WTO in May 1998.

โœ…National nutrition survey-

๐Ÿ”ดIn 2019 GOI+ UNICEF conducted 1st time

๐Ÿ”ดThe survey recorded not only micronutrient deficiencies but also details of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol and kidney function in children and adolescents.

โš ๏ธThe National Nutrition Survey is different from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) as,
NFHS collects data to measure the prevalence of stunting, wasting and underweight and household dietary intake to measure deficiencies.

๐ŸŽ–Moreover, the survey collects data only for the age groups of 1-5 years and adults, and not for school going children between the age of 5 and 19 years

โœ…Indus water treaty

โœ…A/C to this river sharing treaty waters of :
๐Ÿ”ดEASTERN RIVERS: Sutlej Beas Ravi- belong to India
๐Ÿ”ดWESTERN RIVERS: Jhelum Chenab Indus- pakistan can use them

โš ๏ธNote : Treaty only says that India should let unrestricted flow of water from western rivers to Pakistan.
โ€ผ๏ธIt doesnโ€™t mean that India canโ€™t use western riverโ€™s water
๐Ÿ”ต India can use the water in western rivers in โ€œnon-consumptiveโ€ needs(irrigation, storage and for electricity production. But India has not fully utilized this provision so far- look at the infographic)

โœ…Role of world bank : The Indus Waters Treaty was signed in 1960 after nine years of negotiations between India and Pakistan with the help of the World Bank, which is also a signatory
โš ๏ธ As a signatory to the Treaty, the World Bankโ€™s role is limited and procedural i.e. designation of people to fulfill certain roles for solving conflict( โ€ผ๏ธNo funding involved)

โœ…APEC vs East asia summit- click here

โœ…One big confusion when reading about IR organizations is :

๐ŸŸก1) Is India a member of that org or not?

๐ŸŸก2) What is the difference of purpose between multilateral agencies that are present in geographically close areas

๐Ÿ”ดASEAN- formed in 1967 by - East Asian economies- motivated by a common fear of communism- i.e. china.

๐Ÿ”ดAPEC- in 1970s -japan= phenomenal growth- possibility of monopoly in East Asia- creation of APEC- in 1970s india was a closed economy - so no interest in APEC- India didnt become a member , although it applied recently(still not a member)

๐Ÿ”ดEAS-2005-times changed-japan is now less powerful than China- Need to manage china through collective bargaining power-cant exclude china because of its might- so included India, Aus, NZ etc to balance-

โš ๏ธCriticism : Little clarity in difference of purpose between ASEAN and EAS
