Autolysis, from the Greek words "auto" (self) and "lysis" (breakdown), refers to the self-digestion or self-destruction of the body's cells and tissues by their own enzymes. Here's a detailed breakdown of the concept:

Mechanism of Autolysis

Cell Death:

After death, cells in the body begin to die due to lack of oxygen and nutrients.

Enzyme Release:

Lysosomes within the cells contain digestive enzymes. Upon cell death, the membranes of these lysosomes break down, releasing the enzymes into the cytoplasm.

Digestion of Cellular Components:

These enzymes start to digest the cellular components, breaking down proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and other macromolecules.

Ricinus communis (Castor Beans)
Toxic Component:
Ricin: A highly potent toxin that inhibits protein synthesis in cells by inactivating ribosomes.

Mechanism of Action:
Ricin enters cells and enzymatically inactivates ribosomes, halting protein synthesis, which leads to cell death.

Toxic Effects:
Ingestion: Causes severe abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and potential organ damage (liver, kidneys).

Lethal Dose: Very small amounts (as little as a single bean) can be lethal if not treated promptly.

Symptoms of Poisoning:
Gastrointestinal distress (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea)
Severe dehydration
Abdominal pain
Organ failure in severe cases
