A 17-year-old girl died from multiple stab wounds after she was attacked at her home, an inquest has heard.
Lainie Williams suffered multiple knife injuries at Wheatley Place, Cefn Fforest, near Blackwood in Caerphilly county, at about 07:15 GMT on 13 November.
Opening the inquest, Rose Farmer, area coroner for Gwent, said: "On November 13 2025, Rhian Stephens, Lainie's mother, called 999 reporting that her daughter was being stabbed.
"Emergency services arrived at the scene and she was pronounced life extinct at the scene by paramedics.
"An inquest is being opened as this is a violent death."
A Home Office pathologist said "multiple sharp force injuries" were the provisional cause of death, the inquest was also told.
The inquest was adjourned until August 2026 for further inquiries.
Mr Cheng faces a three-week trial at Cardiff Crown Court.

16,499 people died by euthanasia in Canada in 2024, accounting for 5.1% of all deaths in the country.
According to the latest report on โmedical assistance in dyingโ (MAiD) from Health Canada released at the end of last month, there was a 6.9% increase in state-assisted deaths in Canada in 2024.
In 2024, although assisted suicide is permitted, in which the person who wishes to end their own life self-administers the lethal substance, there was not a single case of assisted suicide. Instead, every single person who died under Canadaโs MAiD programme died by euthanasia. In 2023, there were fewer than five instances of assisted suicide.
There have been a total of 76,475 instances of euthanasia and assisted suicide since they were made legal in Canada in 2016.

Twelve ex-police officers would have faced gross misconduct cases over the Hillsborough disaster, a long-awaited report from the policing watchdog finds.
Ninety-seven Liverpool supporters were killed during a crush at the FA Cup semi-final at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough ground on 15 April 1989.
The law at the time means no officers will face disciplinary proceedings because they had all retired before the probe began in 2012.

Russian President Vladimir Putin today warned he is ready for a war with Europe - as Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner arrived for peace talks in Moscow.
Ahead of a meeting with Kushner and US envoy Steve Witkoff, the Kremlin strongman also warned that defeat of European powers would be so absolute that there would be no one left to even negotiate a peace deal.
'We are not planning to go to war with Europe, but if Europe wants to and starts, we are ready right now,' he said.

The organisation that oversees girl guide groups in the UK has announced it is banning trans girls from joining.
Girlguiding said the move โ which means it will not accept biological boys who identify as girls - was in response to the Supreme Court ruling earlier this year that said sex meant biological sex in equality law.
The trustees said they had made the "difficult decision" with a "heavy heart" and there would be further announcements on what this will mean for current members.

A grooming gangs inquiry in Scotland must be set up urgently, a leading child abuse expert who investigated English scandals has said.
Professor Alexis Jay, the leader of the Rotherham and child sex abuse inquiries in England, said too little was known about child sexual exploitation north of the border and that an investigation could lead to a full-blown public inquiry.
The intervention is likely to make the Scottish governmentโs ongoing refusal to order an independent investigation into the issue untenable.
The Scottish government has argued against the need for an inquiry into groups of men who abuse children and young people through coercion and manipulation, with Swinney telling first ministerโs questions in September that he was not โpersuaded of the necessityโ. However, survivors have since come forward to speak out about their abuse at the hands of grooming gangs in Scotland.
