Today we want to share with you an intersting architectural theory, "Critical Regionalism".

The stylings of critical regionalism seek to provide an architecture rooted in the modern tradition, but tied to geographical and cultural context. Critical regionalism is not simply regionalism in the sense of vernacular architecture. It is a progressive approach to design that seeks to mediate between the global and the local languages of architecture.

The term critical regionalism was first used by Alexander Tzonis and Liane Lefaivre and later more famously by Kenneth Frampton. According to Frampton, critical regionalism should adopt modern architecture critically for its universal progressive qualities but at the same time should value responses particular to the context. Emphasis should be on topography, climate, light, tectonic form rather than scenographic and photogenic driven design and the tactile sense rather than the visual. In the employment of tectonics the designer is considerate of available resources, skills and the associated traditions of local craft and construction.

This is Alvar Aalto's Säynätsalo Town Hall, one of the most famous Critical Regionalist buildings. The building is designed with emphasis on function and rationality, yet draws influence from traditional styles and uses traditional materials like brick and wood accents to reflect and complement the heavily forested surroundings. Also check out the works of Tadao Ando, one of the most successful and prolific Critical Regionalists.👇👇👇👇👇👇👇
