Terra Dubai

Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion, Expo 2020 Dubai: Located in Dubai, UAE, and designed by Grimshaw Architects with engineering services from Buro Happold, Terra embodies Expo 2020’s theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.’ Built for Emaar Properties, it showcased innovations in energy and water management during the Expo, which saw representatives from 192 countries and over 24 million visitors.

The Pavilion features an 86,000ft² exhibition space, including an auditorium, courtyard, and reservoir, and is sunken into the ground for thermal mass cooling. Key features include a 130-meter wide steel canopy with photovoltaic (PV) panels and 19 PV ‘energy trees’ that track the sun, contributing to its net-zero energy goals. Advanced computational methods and 40% recycled structural steel enhance sustainability.

Water management strategies include wastewater reuse, reed bed greywater treatment, and atmospheric water extraction, achieving a 92% reduction in water demand.

Al Bahr Towers, Abu Dhabi

Al Bahar Towers, designed by Aedas and located at the Eastern entrance of the junction of Al Saada and Al Salam Streets in Abu Dhabi, exemplify a harmonious blend of cultural heritage and modern sustainability. The two 25-floor office towers, accommodating between 1,000 and 1,100 employees each, align with the 2030 Development Plan for Abu Dhabi, emphasizing environmental and cultural responsibility. The design is inspired by nature and Islamic architectural traditions, particularly through the use of "mashrabiya" screens. These dynamic screens, influenced by native plant movements, adjust throughout the day based on the sun's position. This innovative façade system is controlled by advanced detection technology, creating an intelligent and responsive structure that significantly reduces solar gain and glare.

The "Mashrabiya" shading system was crucial in securing the commission for Aedas. Collaborating with Arup Engineers, they developed a façade that respects traditional Arab architecture while incorporating modern technology. The geometric patterns of the screen, comprising over 1,000 moving elements, adjust throughout the day, similar to the design of the Arab World Institute in Paris by Jean Nouvel. The south façade includes internal, open-air gardens that provide shade and serve as meeting and break areas. The podium houses shared facilities such as prayer rooms, restaurants, and an auditorium, with differentiated access for the public, staff, and VIPs. Two underground parking levels accommodate 80 vehicles, and a mezzanine area serves as a meeting space for personnel. The top floor, at 120 meters, features a public observation deck.

The computer-controlled shading system operates as a curtain-wall positioned two meters from the exterior façade, consisting of micro-perforated glass fiber panels that respond to the sun’s movement, reducing solar gain by over 50%. This enhances daylight penetration, reduces artificial lighting and air conditioning needs, and cuts CO2 emissions by approximately 1,750 tonnes per year. The south-facing roofs incorporate photovoltaic cells, generating around 5% of the total energy required, primarily for water heating. As one of the first buildings in the Gulf to receive an LEED Silver rating, Al Bahar Towers contribute to broader discussions on “cost of use” and “total lifetime cost,” setting a precedent for sustainable building practices in the region. The project demonstrates how modern technology and traditional design can coexist, resulting in a sustainable and efficient architectural marvel that meets contemporary standards and addresses future challenges.
