The Airport realises a vision for an environmentally sensitive, regionally apt, airport architecture. The building secures Amman’s position as the main regional hub and it allows the airport to progressively increase capacity. The building is constructed entirely from concrete because of the high thermal mass of the material. The tessellated roof canopy comprises a series of shallow modular concrete domes extending to shade the façades. The domes branch out from the supporting columns and daylight enters through split beams at the column junctions. Two piers of departure gates run parallel to the central building, which contains the main commercial and processing areas. Between them, there are open-air courtyards and the forecourt is enlarged to create a landscaped plaza.

Terra Dubai

Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion, Expo 2020 Dubai: Located in Dubai, UAE, and designed by Grimshaw Architects with engineering services from Buro Happold, Terra embodies Expo 2020’s theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.’ Built for Emaar Properties, it showcased innovations in energy and water management during the Expo, which saw representatives from 192 countries and over 24 million visitors.

The Pavilion features an 86,000ft² exhibition space, including an auditorium, courtyard, and reservoir, and is sunken into the ground for thermal mass cooling. Key features include a 130-meter wide steel canopy with photovoltaic (PV) panels and 19 PV ‘energy trees’ that track the sun, contributing to its net-zero energy goals. Advanced computational methods and 40% recycled structural steel enhance sustainability.

Water management strategies include wastewater reuse, reed bed greywater treatment, and atmospheric water extraction, achieving a 92% reduction in water demand.
