The first woman architect in Ethiopia passed away.
Mrs. Mntwab Adugna was born to her father, Mr. Adugna Kasa, and to her mother, a female patriot, Mrs. Mulumebeth Hailesalase, on the 27th of December, 1931, in the city of Nairobi, Kenya.
Mrs. Mntwab Adugna grew up in Harar with her parents and older brother when she was a child back home. She attended Harar Yeshi Emebet Boarding School for her primary education.
She received an education that was unimaginable for a girl of her generation, and started her high school education from the seventh grade, and her first and second degrees in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Eighty-eight-year-old Ms. Mntwab, who earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in regional planning, is the first black female architectural designer for our country, Ethiopia, and perhaps even for Africa.
Architect Mntwab Adugna worked in Europe especially in Germany for years before returning to her country to serve.

Among these, their participation in the design of the stadium where the German Munich Olympics were held is mentioned.
Architect Mntwab Adugna brought the knowledge she gained through education and experience back to her country and served for decades in different positions of responsibility in foreign organizations, government offices and personally through volunteering and employment from the era of Haile Selassie to the era of EPRDF.

Architect Mentwab was a mother of one daughter and one son, grandmother of four sons.
The first woman architect, Mntwab Adugna, was a six-lingual expert who could speak Amharic, Oromo, Somali, English, German, and Bulgarian languages fluently from the country where she grew up and the different countries where she studied and worked.
Architect Mntwab Adugna, who lived in retirement with her daughter, passed away on Monday, September 25, 2023 at the age of eighty-five.
Her funeral was held on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
