Today we are delving into a very new design movement that is very intriguing to all, especially us africans......Afro-Futurism.

A term first popularized in the ’90s by cultural critics such as Mark Dery, Afrofuturism is a literary and cultural aesthetic that uses the tools and tropes of science fiction, as well as references to African and non-Western mythology, as a means to confront and analyze the present-day issues faced by people of color.

Like any aesthetic language it can be manifested in literature, Fashion, Industrial design, Visual and performance art, Architecture or Urbanism.

Afrofuturism is the reimagining of a future filled with arts, science and technology seen through a black lens. What makes Afrofuturism significantly different from standard science fiction is that it’s steeped in ancient African traditions and black identity. A narrative that simply features a black character in a futuristic world is not enough. To be Afrofuturism, it must be rooted in and unapologetically celebrate the uniqueness and innovation of black culture.

Afrofuturism is an artistic aesthetic, but it’s also a way of looking at the world. It’s about just looking at other relationships to the human experience and coming to understand how that can inform our today and tomorrow. We’re just talking about the ability for people to tell stories about the future. The ability of people to shape the present and the future. That's just a very human desire.
