Miami Modernisim ( MiMo)
Forwarded from Negede Abreha
Miami Beach’s coastline is coveted by the international jet set for its crystal blue water, soft white sand, abundant sunshine, diverse culture and, perhaps most famously, its Art Deco architecture. And while Deco absolutely defines the South Beach aesthetic, all Easter-egg hues and cheerfully stylized facades, there’s the equally vibrant North Beach that’s defined by another architectural style: Miami Modern, or MiMo for short.

Miami Modernist architecture, or MiMo, is a regional style of architecture that developed in South Florida during the post-war period. The style was internationally recognized as a regionalist response to the International Style. It can be seen in most of the larger Miami and Miami Beach resorts built after the Great Depression. Because MiMo styling was a not just a response to international architectural movements but also to client demands, themes of glamour, fun, and material excess were added to otherwise stark, minimalist, and efficient styles of the era.

To some degree, Miami developed the style through the work of younger architects immediately after the war; they were more closely aligned with media promotions and sensationalism than older architects of the era. The region successfully transposed its extravagant resort styling to a national audience easily captivated by the area’s relative exoticism.

MiMo is characterized by “pylons, marine imagery, sweeping curves, catwalks, open courts, porte-cochères, brise-soleil and delta wings.” More natural and traditional imagery often found on a MiMo building includes “contrasting textures of stone, brick, tile and patterned stucco, layered brick, stone and exposed brick (a Frank Lloyd Wrightinfluence), ornamental ironwork and decorative railings rendered in modern geometric designs.”
