🪙 Zero-day vulnerability discovered in Bitcoin mining — it has existed since day one

Researcher Loïc Morel has uncovered a bug in Bitcoin’s difficulty adjustment mechanism.

Every 2016 blocks, nodes calculate the new difficulty by comparing the timestamp of the first and last block in the period. Because of this, they only measure 2015 intervals instead of 2016 — this is known as an “off-by-one” error.

The real issue: difficulty adjustment periods don’t overlap. This opens the door to a Time Warp attack.

An attacker with majority hash power could:

Set minimal timestamps on all blocks in the period (except the last one);
Set the maximum allowed timestamp on the final block.

As a result, the measured period appears longer than it actually was, causing the difficulty to drop. By repeating this, the attacker could theoretically mine up to 6 blocks per second.

A fix has already been proposed via soft fork BIP-0054. It introduces a rule that the timestamp of the first block in a new difficulty period cannot exceed the timestamp of the last block of the previous period by more than 2 hours.

This critical bug has existed in Bitcoin’s code for 17 years.

🇺🇿Uzbekistan Launches Special Mining Zone — Besqala Mining Valley

Residents of the zone will receive full tax exemption until January 1, 2035.

They are also promised connection to the power grid using renewable energy and hydrogen power plants from Karakalpakstan.

Key Conditions:

1️⃣Mined crypto assets can be sold on both Uzbek and international exchanges
2️⃣Licenses are issued by the National Agency for Advanced Projects
3️⃣To obtain resident status, legal entities must submit an application to the Besqala Mining Valley Directorate
4️⃣Mining is allowed only for legal entities
5️⃣P2P trading is prohibited, and crypto cannot be used as a means of payment

The licensing rules have been in effect since 2023, but the first mining license in Uzbekistan was issued only at the end of February 2026.

📈 Bitdeer Shows Impressive Growth

Leading crypto mining company Bitdeer has significantly expanded its mining operations, reaching an operating hash rate of 69.5 EH/s. This represents a massive 504% increase compared to the same period last year and allowed the company to surpass its closest competitor, Marathon Digital (MARA), in total hash rate.

According to Bitdeer’s March report, the company mined 661 Bitcoin during the month — a 480% increase year-over-year. Bitdeer currently operates approximately 262,000 mining units, of which 225,000 are company-owned. The company’s total power capacity, including projects under development, has reached an impressive 3 gigawatts (GW).

Bitdeer’s overall managed hash rate — which includes both self-owned and hosted equipment — grew to 78.1 EH/s. For comparison, Marathon Digital currently stands at 66.4 EH/s, while CleanSpark is at 47.3 EH/s. This solidifies Bitdeer’s position as one of the leading players in the global Bitcoin mining industry.
