On 27th February, a court in Russia's North Caucasus region of Chechnya sentenced teenager Nikita Zhuravel to 3 1/2 years in prison and 300 hours of community work for publicly burning a Koran.
Nikita Zhuravel, 19, who set fire to a Koran in the Russian city of Volgograd, and extradited to Grozny at the request of Chechen authorities was found guilty of "insulting believers' feelings" and "religious hatred-based hooliganism."
In August, video showing Adam Kadyrov, the 15-year-old son of Chechnya's ruler Ramzan Kadyrov, beating Zhuravel while in custody caused public outrage.
Rights defenders have questioned the legality of Zhuravel's trial being held in mostly Muslim-populated Chechnya instead of the Volgograd region, where the incident took place.

Nikita Zhuravel was detained in May 2023 under a law against 'offending religious believers' after he burned a copy of the Quran outside of a mosque in the Russian city of Volgograd.
After the incident, Russian investigators transferred his case to Chechnya, knowing full well what would happen to him once he arrived there.
Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov soon published a video in which his son Adam was shown beating and kicking the defendant while he was in prison awaiting trial.
