I haven’t used an alarm to wake up for years. When I actually have needed to make sure I didn’t oversleep for something, I’d set an alarm at a time that would actually make me late. I’d still leave enough minutes to make it out the door, but it wasn’t when I really wanted to get up.
And, guess what? I’d always wake up before it went off.
We know what we need to do. But if we also tell ourselves that we don’t trust ourselves enough to wake from sleep at the right time, we automatically depend on that alarm. It’s a small form of handing off your autonomy to something external but it carries a big message.
When the Subconscious mind has been impressed with the idea of when we need to wake up, we can get along just fine without an alarm clock. It knows everything. Including what time it is. It’ll even remind us of things we’ve forgotten with our Conscious Mind at the right time. We just have to be paying attention to its nudges and signals.
I sleep so much better without the thought that I’m going to be jarred awake rattling around in my brain all night. And not being pulled out of sleep by an alarm seems to allow me to kind of finish sleeping before I wake.
Now, if your body is exhausted or deep down you don’t actually want to wake up and report for life duty the next morning, then those are other issues at play that need to be dealt with first.
But, if you’re someone who has always relied on a clock to wake you up, I wonder what would happen if you tried to get along without it. 🫶
