Engineers have been doing what they do best: making smaller and smaller versions of existing technologies.

This time, they’ve made a microchip so small you’ll need a magnifying glass to appreciate it.

Scientists from Northwestern University in Evanston, #Illinois have invented winged microchips that can fly, track airborne diseases and monitor pollution.

The micro-electronics are water soluble, so they’ll just dissolve when they hit the ground.

Their winged design means they can float through the air like the propeller seeds of a maple tree.

Plus, although they are as small as a grain of sand, they can be packed with ultra-miniaturized technology, including sensors, power sources, antennas for wireless communication, and embedded memory to store data – proving size doesn’t matter after all.
