Alireza Doroudi, a University of Alabama doctoral student originally from Iran who wasdetained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, on Thursday was denied bond.
Judge Maithe González said Doroudi failed to meet the burden of showing that he was not a threat to national security.

“I’m flabbergasted,” said Doroudi’s attorney, David Rozas.
“She said it would be our duty to show he is not a national security risk but the government has out forth no evidence in the record that my client is actually a national security risk,” Rozas said.
“They’re asking us to prove a negative, which is impossible to do because I don’t, I’m not part of the government,” Rozas said.

A UCLA international graduate student has been detained at the U.S.-Mexico border and is being held by Customs and Border Protection, the school confirmed late Thursday.

Few details were released about the student, including her name and nationality.

The complaint alleges that ICE has abruptly and unlawfully terminated the students’ legal status in the United States “(…) stripping them of their ability to pursue their studies and maintain employment in the United States and risking their arrest, detention, and deportation.”
The administration, the suit says, has terminated their status by removing the students from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) used by the Department of Homeland Security to maintain information mainly regarding international students and their status in the country.
