Dear brothers and sisters in Canada,

Be extremely careful when paying zakat (for those required to). Zakat is restricted to 8 criteria of people. The Ikhwani cartel in Canada wish to envision a “new model” for funnelling (siphoning) the zakat of Muslim in Canada towards their causes and ideals. The vague, political speak employed in this request is typical of their modus operandi. They state that “Zakat was not meant to be only a means for alleviating poverty, but also an economic tool to invest in community”. Zakat is not an economic slush fund. Many of their like-minded masajid and centres hold it permissible to use zakat to pay Imam salaries or build masjid extensions, fund political or extremists organisations, a wide variety of “economic investments” etc.

Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler - an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise. (9:60)

Th noble scholar, the late Imam, Al-ʿAllāmah ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn Bāz was asked about the using zakat to finish a masjid and in it he addressed the elegible recipients of zakat: https://www.troid.org/using-zakah-monies-to-finish-a-masjid/

Be sure when paying zakat that the organisation you entrust will fulfil the requirement according to the shar’iah. Remember that they are being deputised by you to distribute your zakah. It is your responsibility to ensure that those you deputise fulfil this task correctly.

A Semi-Comprehensive Discussion on the Ḥadīth:

تسحرنا مع رسول الله (ﷺ) ثم قمنا إلى الصلاة‏“.‏ قلت: ”كم كان قدر ما بينهما“، قال: ”خمسين آية“.‏

“We had saḥūr with Allāh’s Messenger (ﷺ). We then stood to perform the prayer.” I asked: “What was the interval between them?” He replied: “Fifty verses.”

Tremendous Hadīth Regarding The 23rd Night of Ramadan and Laylat al-Qadr Possibly Being Tonight.

Muhammad b. Ibrahīm narrated to us, from Ibn Abdullah b. Unays Al-Juhani, from his father, who said:

I said to the Messenger of Allah: "I have a home in the desert where I live and pray, by the grace of Allah. But command me regarding a night (on which I should come to this mosque (i.e. Masjid al-Nabawī)."

He replied: "Come on the twenty-third night."

I (Muhammad ibn Ibrahim, a narrator) asked his son, "How did your father act?"

He replied, "He used to enter the mosque after performing the ‘Asr prayer and would not leave for any need until he had performed the Fajr prayer. When he had prayed Fajr, he would find his riding beast waiting at the door of the mosque, mount it, and return to his home in the desert." [Sunan Abī Dawūd 1380]

[Q]: If a person spreads his prayer mat to preemptively save his spot (in the masjid), is it permissible for one to remove it and pray in that spot?

Some background:
This is a prevalent error observed in masājid around the world - reserving preserved spots in the masjid by throwing down a prayer mat (or some other belongs) to hold a preferred spot in the masjid. Here, Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiiyah and Imām Ibn Bāz explain the impermissibly of this. However, it should be noted as the great Imām, Ibn Taymiyyah states that in interacting with people who do this: "One should also take precautions that his actions do not stipulate the occurrence of that which is even more objectionable [in the form of fighting, screaming, and shouting]. And Allāh knows best." So it is important to smile, take people by the hand, and explain to them the Sunnah in this regard as explained by the great scholars. If someone brushes this off, perhaps seek out an elder to advise him or the imām. Escalating the situation into a major disturbance may bring more harm to the parties involved and the other worshippers. Wisdom and tact are needed. We must uphold the Sunnah but with wisdom and fair preaching.

Excerpted from the forthcoming publication (troid.org) entitled: Islamic Rulings on Prayer Mats and Praying in Shoes

Rulings from Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah, Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn, Imām Nāsir al-Dīn al-Albānī, Imām ʿAbd al-Azīz bin Bāz, The Permanent Committee for Islamic Research and Fatāwá
