transmediale residencies 2026

The first remote phase of the transmediale 2026 residencies begins next week! 💫 We are excited to introduce the residents’ projects during the coming days, starting with Data Feeding: Slow Machine by Ahreum Lee 🌊

Building on and translating her long-term research into space, Ahreum will be developing an interactive installation that reimagines digital infrastructure through deliberate slowness, using water as its central medium. Data Feeding: Slow Machine imagines a distributed constellation of shrines functioning as a slow, community-centred data centre. Ahreum is the artist-in-residence for the 2026 Residency Programme in collaboration with Arts Council Korea, the second iteration of this cooperation.

transmediale 2027 is calling for applications for the Lattice Labs, a series of experimental working groups dedicated to rethinking and testing alternatives to technological monocultures of extraction and surveillance.

Each Lab is formed by about five participants and guided by an experienced artist or technologist. The call is open for early career and emerging artists, researchers, curators, students, and practitioners from all disciplines. Participation in a Lattice Lab requires a commitment to an active working process from July 2026 to January 2027. ⚗️

Hyperstitions, Tsunamis & Y2K by Martyna Marciniak

During her residency, Martyna will expand her ongoing research into the poetics and politics of visual misinformation. Her new project revisits known cases of collective misremembering and the idea of hyperstition: the recursive entanglement of fiction and reality, where imagined scenarios begin to shape perception and future possibility. Martyna is the artist-in-residence for the 2026 Vilém Flusser Residency for Artistic Research in cooperation with the University of the Arts Berlin (UdK).

Minor Indexes Lab
Led by selfservice.studio

Working towards the next festival edition, the Lattice Labs are open for submissions 💫 The labs are a process-based educational format for emerging artists, researchers, and practitioners looking to develop their practice in dialogue with others.

The Minor Indexes Lab develops strategies for autonomy, confrontation, and resilience under conditions of consolidation, capture, and surveillance in an increasingly repressive context. The lab's substrate is a Minor Index – a situated dataset built to confront the conditions of control: activated, composable, accessible, additive within a local hold.

Application deadline: June 7, 2026 (23:59 CEST)

This Lab takes place in Berlin, and presence in the city is required throughout the whole time.

Obscure Detritus Lab
Led by Alex Declino

The Obscure Detritus Lab acts as revenge for the dead tech that refuses to die, the ghosts in the machines that refuse to be exorcised, matter self-organising in silence before snapping free from its containers and screeching out across the streets. Inspired by the tradition of Commedia Dell'Arte, this lab will build a cohort of AI characters defined by personality and obsession rather than competence and utility and set them loose in a world simulation to observe what narratives, conflicts, and unexpected behaviours emerge.

Application deadline: June 7, 2026 (23:59 CEST)

The lab will take place mostly online, with the possibility of meeting in person at Sybil in Berlin from September.

Reclaiming the Interface Lab
Led by Olia Lialina

The Reclaiming the Interface Lab proposes an intervention into the ongoing dissolution of the interface. Through historical inquiry and speculative making, the lab revisits the interface as a staged performance inviting the development of prototypes, gestures, and fictions that reclaim it as a space of imagination, negotiation, and agency.

Application deadline: June 7, 2026 (23:59 CEST)

The lab takes place fully remote, with presence in Berlin during the festival (January 26 February 1, 2027).

Emergence: Hidden States and Other Worlds by Laura Benech

During her residency, Laura will investigate the concept of latency within entangled systems and how they shape the experience of coexistence between human and synthetic agents. Laura Benech is the artist-in-residence for the coExistence Residency in collaboration with HEK (Basel, Switzerland) and Pleamar (Mar del Plata, Argentina), with the support of Pro Helvetia.

Playful Misuse (of everyday software) Lab
Led by viola he

Building towards transmediale 2027, the Lattice Labs are open for submissions ⚗️

Led by viola he, the Playful Misuse (of everyday software) Lab is an invitation to build a more direct and playful relationship to software, by reappropriating existing tools as instruments for collective performance and play. Participants explore how intentional playful engagement can rebuild a sense of agency, and how we can learn to love the computer (and through that, trust each other) again 🛝

Application deadline: June 7, 2026 (23:59 CEST)

The lab takes place fully remote, with presence in Berlin during the festival (January 26 – February 1, 2027).

Solidarity Economies Lab
Led by Sepp Eckenhaussen and Geert Lovink

The Solidarity Economies Lab aims to develop its own collaborative economic model tailored to the specific needs of its cohort: a group of practicing art workers. Participants will review existing models of value creation and redistribution and think of platform cooperatives, rotating funds, cultural publishing ventures, NFTs, DAOs, community currencies, basic income experiments, fair payment guidelines, and trade and social unions.

Application deadline: June 7, 2026 (23:59 CEST)

The meetings will take place online. However, this Lab requires participation in the Design Sprint in Berlin (first weekend of October) and the festival (January 26 – February 1, 2027).

When Images Become Systems: On Visuality, Affect and Platform Power by Nora O’ Murchú and published by Aksioma is available to pre-order! 🪞

In this publication, former transmediale’s artistic director Nora O’ Murchú traces how artists make the conditions of the image visible through works by Simone C Niquille, Bassam Issa Al-Sabah, Jennifer Mehigan, and Ayoung Kim; exposing a regime of visibility in which the synthetic governs the real as we have become disconcertingly familiar with a new kind of image – affective, performative, computational – one that reorganises perception while destabilising meaning in real time.
