🕉️ STORY TIME | Krishna's Penance for a Son, and His Visit to Kailash
🪈 The Vishnu Avatar Who Sought Shiva's Blessing
On the day we celebrate Krishna's birth, here's a story most people, even devoted Krishna bhakts, have never heard.
Krishna's wife, Devi Jambavati, longed for a son as glorious as Indra. To fulfill that wish, she performed intense penance and journeyed to the ashram of Maharshi Upamanyu, on the banks of the Ganges.
There, something remarkable happened. Upamanyu was stunned when Krishna himself expressed a determination to personally seek darshan of Shiva and Parvati. The sage wondered aloud, "You are an avatar of Vishnu yourself. Why do you seek vision of Mahadeva?"
Krishna didn't answer with words. He simply followed the path.
📿 Under Upamanyu's guidance, Krishna undertook the Paashupata Vrata, sacred ash, a shaven head, rough bark clothing, and relentless Rudra Japa, the same discipline once followed by Vasishtha, Vyasa, and Yajnavalkya to earn the same darshan.
✨ After sustained effort, the sky itself opened. Krishna beheld Shiva in his full cosmic form, crowned, wielding the Pinaka bow and trishula, three-eyed, radiant as a thousand suns, Parvati beside him, Brahma glorifying him from one side, Ganesha, Nandi, and Kartikeya standing witness.
Krishna offered a magnificent hymn, calling Shiva the root cause of all creation, the master of the three gunas, the one from whom Brahma and Vishnu themselves emerge. Moved, Shiva embraced Krishna and said, "You yourself are the giver of every wish. What could you possibly ask of me?"
Krishna smiled and asked anyway, a son as renowned as Mahadeva himself. Shiva and Parvati granted it. 🙏 Krishna then traveled to Kailash itself, purely for the joy of it, before returning to Dwaraka. Not long after, his son Samba was born to Jambavati.
🕉️ On reaching Dwaraka, sage Markandeya arrived, and together with Krishna, installed a Shiva Linga for formal worship.
And then comes the part almost nobody expects from a Krishna story.
Markandeya, puzzled, asked Krishna why he, himself worthy of worship, would worship Shiva at all. Krishna's answer is one of the most direct declarations of unity in all of Hindu scripture:
"Naavayorvidyatey bhedo Vedeyshvevam vinischayah", "There is no difference between us whatsoever. The Vedas themselves settle this."
Krishna went further, warning that anyone who performs tapas, yajna, or worship of Vishnu while harboring dislike for Shiva would find every bit of that effort rendered fruitless. This is the doctrine of Hari-Hara Aikya, the identity of Vishnu and Shiva as one and the same, spoken not by a sage or commentator, but by Krishna himself.
Today we celebrate the birth of a child in a Mathura prison who grew to become Purushottam. It's worth remembering that even he walked the path of tapasya, bowed before Shiva, and told the world there was never really two of them to begin with. 🙏
