Hot take: the CNT imposed the real dictatorship of the proletariat and gommunists fought against it
This is fundamentally correct, and in some hours i will do a longpost explaining why the PCE did what they did, what are the points for it, and what are the points against it, and a critique of anarchism and the strategies played by the CNT

Hot take: the CNT imposed the real dictatorship of the proletariat and gommunists fought against it
The line of the communist internationale
The communist internationale divided countries in 3:
-Developed countries that should jump directly to socialism
-Semifeudal countries, or with feudal remnants, that should had an alliance between the workingclass and the bourgeoise led by the working class
-Imperialised countries, whose main objective should be self determination, and independence from the colonial masters.
Spain was wrongly clasified as the second. This led to incorrect lines in many issues, such as proclaiming Catalonians as an oppressed nation (when in fact, they benefited massively from the division of labour within spain). This led to the division of the PCE (spanish communist party) within the spanish state, creating the PSUC (unified socialist party of catalonia) and others. Another issue was the alliance with the democratic national bourgeoise led by the working class, which was applied mainly in those "oppressed nations".
The spanish revolution according the the third internationale, should be a bourgeoise-democratic one, not a socialist one.

The translation of this theoretical lines resulted in the creation of the popular front in 1936. During the war, the line became, support the bourgeoise state, wimning the war against reaction, and then stablish the dictatorship of the proletariat. The CNT line was dictatorship of the proletariat, and do the war with it.
Pros of the PCE line:
-Non-communist allies, the PNV (basque nationalists), ERC (catalonian nationalists), PSOE (socialdemocrats).
-Foreign friendly, the republic aroused simpathies abroad, among liberals and socialdemocrats.
-Weak PCE, they just didnt had the force to take over, and their work within the popular front made them grow stronger
-Less forces needed on the rear, as the CNT demonstrated, by hoarding 50% of their rifles on the rear, dictatorship of the proletariat would have drained resources needed in the front
Cons of the PCE line:
-Dependency on their bourgeoise allies, this will result on several problems, like the nothern front surrendering due to a PNV treason, and Madrid surrendering due to a PSOE coup.
-Managing to achieve dictatorship of the proletariat post war its unsure. Could had happened, but there was a very real posibility that a victory in the war would just reinstated the liberal republic, we will never know.
-Allied neutrality, despite it being more friendly to foreign powers, this wint make the allies take a decisive stand with them
-No dictatorship of the proletariat, at least until the war is won

The main issue they had was spontaneity. They suddenly found themselves in power and acted accordingly. They didnt took power in a planned effort, just state forces insurrected, and by pure courage and revolution fervor they managed to take them down (which its quite a formidable deed).
Contrary to the CNT, the PCE had a concrete political line that was debated, voted in the congresses, and applied through all the organization, the centralism made the cadres more disciplined in following party line... This is an issue CNT has been facing since forever. For example, during the strike to la canadenca, the moderates of the CNT pacted with the gov the end to the strike in exchange for the 8 hours workday, but the hardline continued agitating for the strike.
When the CNT stablished the dictatorship of the proletariat in catalonia, it wasnt part of a conciuss effort, they just did it because they could. This subordination to spontaneity has been far more damaging to anarchism movements as time went on, reaching this point when... Well just look at US "anarchists" to see how that its going for them.
