The forbidden fruit that grew on the tree of knowledge, which God has commanded mankind not to eat is commonly depicted as an apple despite that the biblical narratives does not identify the fruit itself.

The belief that it was an apple possibly originated from an intended pun in the translation of the Hebrew Bible into Latin under Saint Jerome of Stridon in 390~ A.D. (the Vulgate).

The Latin word "Malum" meant "evil" as an adjective (through "Malus"), and "apple" (or any fleshy seed-bearing fruit like a pear, fig, peach, etc.) as a noun.

"But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat. for in what day soever thou shalt eat of it, thou shalt die the death." #Genesis 2:17

"וּמִפְּרִי הָעֵץ, אֲשֶׁר בְּתוֹךְ-הַגָּן--אָמַר אֱלֹהִים לֹא תֹאכְלוּ מִמֶּנּוּ, וְלֹא תִגְּעוּ בּוֹ:  פֶּן-תְּמֻתוּן."

In the Hebrew Bible, the word used to refer to the forbidden fruit is pri (פְּרִי) which simply translates broadly to "fruit" and can mean any type of fruit.
