After interacting with thousands of students and interviewing 100's of Toppers, I realized that most of the students scoreless not because of lack of knowledge or hard work or intelligence but because of lack of guidance, planned approach and poor study techniques. So, the problem most of the students face is not of potential but of converting that potential into performance.
So what are the mistakes which students commit. Today I am going to share 10 mistakes which all students make.
1. No planning
Most of the students think planning is not required and they want to go with the flow. This is the biggest mistakes, all the toppers I have interviewed in last 15 years have a detailed plan.
We have plans for small trivial things in life like going for a movie but we do not have plan for the most important thing i.e. success in exam we are preparing for .
The reason why most of us do not plan is
• Because we are afraid of failure
• Because we do not want to work under pressure and want to work in a rel

Mistake 2: Complain of poor concentration power
Most of the students think that their concentration power is weak but it is not.
When we watch a favorite film, we are able to concentrate for three hours. We hardly realize who’s beside us, when did he/she get up in between, and so forth. Similarly, a cricket match absorbs all our attention and our eyes get glued to the TV screen.
We can #concentrate when we are watching a movie or a cricket match but when it comes to studying a subject especially a difficult subject we feel distracted by the slightest noise, the faintest whisper, even by the most distant sound of music. So, the basic problem is not that of concentration but is of interest in the activity which we are doing. Concentration is nothing but the extent of #interest and involvement in the subject.

Don’t use too many courses or books. Most of the students end up buying 5 to 6 books for one subject.
Remember that more than 80 to 90 % problems in most of the books are same so what you are doing when you use 5 to 6 books is just repetition of same problems.
Instead of it what makes sense is that just buy 1 or 2 books to master the fundamentals and then go for different question banks to do more and more practice.
Decide about the course & books after discussing with your seniors & friends & then stick to them.
Remember it is not about running fast it is about running in the right direction/5-6 books/10,000 quest

05 of 10: Lack of Consistency
Consistency matters more than intensity. Showing up and doing a little bit every day is more important than showing up big but rarely.
A consistent study of 4 hours every day is more important and powerful than studying 12 hours a day and then not studying at all for the next 2 days. Explain the graph. Learning graph mover up in a consistent manner.
Studying 12 hours at a stretch the learning capability decreases.
Learning = No of hours X Focus
So plan for short duration consistent blocks with high focus rather than long duration with low focus. Overnight studying is usually not recommended.
Remember, you will learn more in six 1 hour periods spaced through the week than in one 6-hour period. So consistency is more important than Intensity.

06 of 10: Does not move out of comfort zone
Toppers move out of comfort zone by continuously moving to difficult problems whereas others want to remain in a comfort zone by solving similar kind of problems
Some students when stuck with problem solving, immediately check the solution mentioned towards the end of the chapter/book because they are not willing to work hard.
So what happens is such students get stuck in the same question again when they are to solve it later. While there are a few other students who struggle with difficult questions for hours.
In the process, they develop their problem-solving skills and take their preparation to the next level.

07 of 10: Working half-heartedly or doing shallow work
Not committed to giving 100% and work half-heartedly
• Sitting in a class and taking notes with the thought that will understand later is shallow work.
• Working 100’s of questions of similar type is shallow work
• Sitting in class passively and just listening is wrong. YOU should actively participate in class.
• Seeing solutions without giving your best are wrong
• Watching TV and studying/Lying on the bed and studying Maths/Reading maths ques like history/studying in a room with a lot of family members all are examples of Working half-heartedly
UPSC Topper said he used to study 5-6 hours and watch a movie every week. Toppers know what is right for them, they don’t do shallow work and work with 100% commitment. Remember the difference is not much in terms of quantity of hours but in more in terms of how they are spent.

08 of 10: Ignore self-study
Most of the students depend too much on coaching and ignore the importance of self-study. I
A student said that sir I come back from school at 2.00 pm and after that, I have 3 hours of coaching so hardly have time for self-study. My answers reduce coaching by 1 hour and add 2 hours of self-study
Irrespective of fact however good your coach is you would not be able to succeed even coaching is not followed by self-study.
Self-study = active learning when you really apply whatever you have learned.

09 of 10: Runs after Learning more concepts & Postpones Revision
Have you ever faced a situation in an exam hall when you feel that you know a question you have solved similar problems during your preparation but you get stuck in the exam hall? It is just because we have not consolidates the concepts properly, we know things but they are not fresh.
It has been seen that many students at the last moment try to postpone the revision process and focus on learning more and more, solving more and more questions, and in this process just ignore the revision. Also in most of the competitive exams, the cut-off varies from 50% to 70% so even if you leave 1 chapter it is OK.
So don’t commit this mistake and Remember in exams your success and failure is dependent on what you know and not dependent on what you don’t know so focus on consolidating what you know.

10 of 10: Does not practice Producing Output/Active learning
Your success is dependent on what extent a student is able to convert his knowledge (input) into a net score (output).
Results of a survey said that most of the students fail not because of a lack of knowledge (input) but because of the inability to convert the input into an output.
In Spite of this, I have frequently seen it that the student still spends 99% of his energy and time in gaining input i.e. acquiring more and more knowledge and ignoring output.
Active recall is better than passive reading and revising. Making chapter wise mind maps with books closed. Teaching concept to your friend/ appearing in a mock test or question bank with time limit all of them are examples of practicing output.
