A startup called Alteon is developing an autonomous aircraft designed to stay in the air for more than a year.
Instead of relying only on fuel, the aircraft uses dynamic soaring — a technique inspired by albatrosses that extracts energy from differences in wind speed above the ocean.
The company has already tested autonomous flights at over 100 km/h less than one meter above the water, although continuous energy-neutral flight has not yet been proven.
