On 31 July 1954, Italian climbers Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli became the first people to reach the summit of K2, the second highest mountain in the world after Mount Everest.
No one who has hoped for something has ever had their hopes perfectly realized. There are compromises, adjustments, contingencies. Eventually, hope becomes indistinguishable from resignation.
