Joseph Goebbels, Hermann Göring and appeasement: a potentially endless debate.

TNO has been facing a massive shift in the last two years from how ThePinkPanzer imagined the mod. To put it mildly, some decisions like the removal of Globalplans, Atlantropa and other changes were quite controversial. Today, however, I will talk about Mr. Vöring and the removal of his path of world conquest.

Our favourite meth-addicted war criminal

To say Göring was a controversial figure would be an understatement. Second only to Hitler in the Nazi regime and one of the, if not the most prominent contender to the national-socialist throne should Mr. Moustache kick the bucket, it has been widely accepted that Göring's portrayal in the mod is far from who he was. Indeed, Göring was a genocidal bastard, but he wasn't really a warmonger, not in the sense of declaring war on the entire world with the threat of nuclear armageddon being very much real.

Reports on Göring's views are conflicting, with some reports claiming he didn't care about national socialism at all and was just an opportunist, along with other reports saying that he was a nazi through and through - this being more likely. By now, his path was scrapped until Victor and the Judge come out, but we don't really know how he will be portrayed, but this is not really the issue.

The issue is that one of the most popular paths in The New Order, one of world conquest, a very popular theme in vanilla HOI4 that helped to tie the mod to its game, is now gone and will not be replaced, and this was VERY controversial, with old-school fans becoming very angry. And we all know there would only be one way of appeasing them if the devs deem it to be worthy.

Goebbels jumpscare

We all know why Joseph Goebbels isn't in the mod. And if you don't know, the devs fucking forgot to put him and then had him killed by French partisans. The current lore says he was killed in Moskowien, but it has the same purpose of taking a prominent Nazi figure away from the mod.

Now, you may think that I'm gonna defend the addition of Goebbels, but that's not exactly the case. I'm personally not a fan of World Conquests, but I understand the appeal of it, along with the fact that old fans of the mod are incredibly pissed by the devs' decision to make everything "realistic" while taking all the fun away, but of course, those are their words, not mine.

The devs, however, need to decide whether or not to appease the old guard, or to completely ignore their complaints to focus on a new target audience. It's undoubtful that recently the second option has been implemented, with major reworks being the focus of the mod, along with, as mentioned before, removing core aspects of old TNO like funni Burgundy and big dam in the Med (along with things that no one cared about like Berezniki until they were gone). BUT, if the developers do decide on taking the Chamberlain route, Goebbels could be a good starting point.

Why Goebbels?

Making Goebbels have a world conquest is a no-brainer - if he is to be used. Thousand Week Reich did it, and that's why his portrait in that mod was used here. His path in TWR revolves around Totaler Krieg, where he declares war on pretty much everyone.

Sounds familiar?

However, even the portrayal of someone like Goebbels as someone who doesn't want anything but war is problematic but could be done, considering how much of a propagandist he was, shaping the minds of millions. The question I leave to you, reader is, DO WE NEED A WORLD CONQUEST PATH? If you are a Panzerite/member of NPPfunny, you will most certainly say yes. If you are a part of Ewatta's Clique or a reformer in general, you will say no, that it doesn't make
The Free France Guide for TNO. Fraternité, Rump states and Colonialism.

So when I'm in discord chat, I see a lot of people asking how can free france reclaim the mainland and I'm tired of writing it out because I too, had this same question when I started playing TNO so I thought I would just make a guide for it.
Free France is a country run by Charles De Gaulle in what would be the modern day Ivory Coast. It's ultimate goal is the liberation of France under a democratic government, though basically any means necessary. Free France is in a similar state to Taiwan in OTL, unrecognized but still holds informal relations with the USA. The USA, Iberia (and brazil I'm pretty sure) are Free France's main allies. these countries will gladly support De Gaulle and Free France, but still recognize the French State as the legitimate government of France (Iberia can switch I'll talk about that later). Free France is basically dependent on these nations for equipment and their later reclamation of the mainland.

Free French Reclamation is dependent on a few things.

1.Victory in the West African War

2. Reconstruction/Recognition

3.The Main War for Reclamation

Lets start with the **West African War.**

The west african war is a major war that happens in west africa (shocker). It can have up to 3 different factions fighting in it at once.
1. The French Military alliance (FMA), lead by Free France.
2. The West African Alliance (WAA), lead by Wolofia.

3. The Pan African Liberation Front (PALF) lead by Cameroon.

Free France will ALWAYS fight the PALF, this is a necessity, and they must win to go onto the second stage.

As for the FMA and the WAA, it can go 3 different ways. For the first scenario, Free France can get Wolofia and most of west africa except for a few countries to join the FMA, essentially led completely by Free France with most nations joining because they were forced, or were weak.

https://preview.redd.it/qlwipengwodb1.png?width=919&format=png&auto=webp&s=9477589296ff9983b07e0cad598f42b5388162b2

The Second Scenario is Free France joining the WAA. This is different to the FMA because Wolofia will lead instead of free france, weakening their presence in africa but still allowing reclamation.
( I forgor picture)

The Third and Final Scenario is the FMA and WAA not allying. This will result in a three way west african war between the FMA, WAA and Cameroon. French Victory in this three way war will result in them probably being much more imperialist than a normal victory in west africa.

Free France after winning under the banner of the FMA will also do some expansion into Africa, attacking Sokoto and Zarmaland to form the puppet state of Niger.
Along with that, after FMA or WAA victory in the West African War, Cameroon will collapse into a civil war, with Nigeria, Northern Nigeria, Biafra, Cameroon, Yorubaland and Kanem fighting for victory.

[This is a picture of FMA victory in the West African War, along with Cameroonian Victory in the civil war.](https://preview.redd.it/0fyvomueyodb1.png?width=462&format=png&auto=webp&s=0e67814a9e554642c23bd12a9514b1087e1f04cd)

Now that the West African War is done, lets move onto the interim stage, **Reconstruction.**

(If you aren't playing the USA, you can probably skip this part, all you need to know is that you need to finish reconstruction to get them into your sphere, otherwise they will join the iberians if negotiations are sucsessful)

[This is the Reconstruction GUI \(yes I cheated for this part\)](https://preview.redd.it/v5eamlwvyodb1.png?width=734&format=png&auto=webp&s=7a25024e0e8145eb59c8792468690cd3ff4759b4)

You will be presented with three different possible projects and interactions.

[Civilian Reconstruction](https://preview.redd.it/fogetfx1zodb1.png?width=342&format=png&auto=webp&s=dc11aa13724e2c3092584cb5e34270a0ce95c0a4)

You will have 240 days to complete reconstruction, if you have money, you should be able to finish it.

[The nice event you get after finishing reconstruction successfully](https://preview.redd.it/gqq3ttbezodb1.png?width=382&format=png&auto=webp&s=8c4fe1ba10b48f70a07d2058920280dfed55f394)

Now then, onto the final stage, **Reclamation.**

There are three possible ways De Gaulle can reclaim the mainland

1. Invasion
2. Civil War Intervention
3. Reconciliation

The Invasion can happen with iberian help, american help or both. Reconstruction must be successful, or the talks with iberia must be successful.

https://preview.redd.it/313lijl10pdb1.png?width=654&format=png&auto=webp&s=944f3e036f1778a58e04dc073f852eec3930b40b

Once those things are done, you are ready for reclamation.

[If you are playing the USA, and you get the event, reclamation will start soon.](https://preview.redd.it/1c9u3yk62pdb1.png?width=370&format=png&auto=webp&s=478b097b7a0bf8893d27ec36e3760781055348fc)

Eventually, Free France, along with the help of the French Democratic Resistance will launch an invasion of the mainland.

https://preview.redd.it/cyp64vlh2pdb1.png?width=1093&format=png&auto=webp&s=8e7f9d630958b9804ad6e7ca54c654a7fdd2e87f

This war allows you to be involved, both as Germany and as the USA.

[American decisions because these are more important](https://preview.redd.it/t3vk3o2l2pdb1.png?width=701&format=png&auto=webp&s=d5911b424482b34c4b04eab7ab091e6b455e2cfa)

This war can go two ways, victory or defeat.
Free French defeat will mean the collapse of the Free French regime. Whether this will end their influence in the region, who knows?

But obviously, you're looking for victory!
If the French Resistance capitulates the French State, they will unite with Free France and form the French Republic lead by Charles De Gaulle under an Interim Government, preparing for democracy.

https://preview.redd.it/c20hcig65pdb1.png?width=1324&format=png&auto=webp&s=c89acc80c775edd2e659df6e9dc9e68e93bb956b

Free France can also invade during the French civil war that occurs with the Sidos Presidency or a Failed Poujade Presidency. It is almost identical to the Free French Invasion, except they will not ally with the French Resistance and will declare war on all participants.

[Invasion Super Event](https://preview.redd.it/7y10w3lz7pdb1.png?width=385&format=png&auto=webp&s=f7040d0ea0cb154ace27ea72e5341361c23bf1f5)

The Final option for reclamation is **Reconciliation.**
This can occur if Pinay is elected as the president of France and manages to fully democratize the French State into the French Republic.

[I'm not sure what the difference is between these news events](https://preview.redd.it/4w1cv30f6pdb1.png?width=985&format=png&auto=webp&s=7f0bc6c1ac46803eb58adb7437d16b0afe585ae2)

Surprisingly, Free France can also reconcile with the French Monarchists!

If the monarchy referendum fails and a constitutional monarchy is formed, Free France can negotiate the same way it can with Pinay's France

No matter how it happens, France has been liberated, and thus

Nixon's role in the mod is a huge missed opportunity

Annoying write-up ahead. I want to say first I love and adore this mod to the ends of the earth. But this aspect of it really frustrates me. Lately, I've been reading and watching a lot of Nixon-related stuff and feel more and more that his role in TNO both makes little sense and misses what could be a really interesting presidency.

In short, Nixon and the Watergate scandal could only have happened after 1968. It was sort of the crescendo of his whole life. He was a deeply paranoid man who felt excluded from elite society and forever bullied and humiliated by people like JFK. The 1960 loss and the 8 years he spent in the shadows led him to completely reinvent himself, hellbent on revenge against the people he perceived to have worked against him. He reimagined himself as the hero of the downtrodden middle America who'd been betrayed by preppy East Coast new dealers and the New Left. It's very unlikely he would sanction what the plumbers did had these 8 years never taken place.

These aren't particularly obscure facts. Most online videos about Nixon delve into this a little. It's why he's such a fascinating president. Which makes TNO's presentation of him all the more bizarre.

In TNO, Nixon enters the White House as an extremely young president who's had a rapid rise to the top. He's not been on the end of any significant betrayal, and the chaos of 1968 hasn't happened to alter his political character in the way it does. And yet, you start the game with the Nixon of 1969 straightaway. Engaged in sabotage, paranoia, and total fear of a society that doesn't even exist yet. It makes no sense whatsoever and doesn't attempt to. The only viable justification for any of this is that JFK was forced onto the ticket with him, and Nixon is embarrassed by how much JFK steals the show. The whole thing feels rather forced and unimaginative. (As a side note, the depiction of JFK as some lost angel who could've saved America is patent boomer mythos. Was this written by Oliver Stone?)

The end result is a really forced watergate that is neither half as interesting or as politically juicy as the real one, nor as climatic. It doesn't feel paced, and it wastes someone who is probably the most interesting President in terms of Alt History possibilities.

There's so much more that could be done with Nixon if he were a 1964 or 1968 candidate. The mod is already scarcely lacking interesting moderate presidencies. The potential for a White House plumbers GUI. A 'List of Enemies' similar to Stalin's purge, gradually shutting up everyone from journalists to actors with interesting events for each one. A realpolitik system of counterbalancing Japan against Germany. Secret FBI Operations to sabotage the Left-NPP.

I guess what I'm saying is, that it's a real shame the way Nixon is in the mod right now, and there's so much room for something more interesting to be done if a new candidate was put in for 1962.

Announcing a TNO Boardgame - The Twilight Order

Hello fellow TNO fans!

My name is Box and today I am proud to announce the revival of my board game project based on the world of The New Order. Last time I posted was 2 years ago and I doubt any of you remember my old post. When I posted that time, this board game was a reskin of the Twilight Struggle wargame - a Cold War duel game where USSR and USA vie for influence across regions of the world, playing event cards and performing coup attempts. In my version, Germany (GGR) and US were playable with Japan being a non-playable third side thwarting attempts of players and stealing control of countries from them. I did a few playtests of the original game and thought it to be passable. But just like TNO transcends the gameplay of base HOI4, I wished to go above and beyond in creating this passion project of mine.

So two years later I'm here to present a new and revised TNO wargame - titled The Twilight Order. At its core it still uses the mechanics of Twilight Struggle - event cards, influence, coup attempts, Space Race and so on. But this time, the game is fully playable for three players, for the strategic and tense experience of a three-sided Cold War that the world of TNO presents.

I advice all reading this to find a friend and go play Twilight Struggle. You can use Tabletop Simulator or buy the digital version on Steam or mobile. I'm not gonna explain the base mechanics here, but rather what differs, because besides the core gameplay I've revised practically everything to make this game stand out.

I'm going to post regular Dev Diaries each week showing how the game and its features and mechanics have evolved. The game is fully playable in its current form, but I will take my time polishing it, writing down the rules, playtesting and porting it to Tabletop Simulator for all to enjoy.

The Twilight Order is a three-way duel wargame based on the highly acclaimed Twilight Struggle board game, transporting its mechanics to the grim alternative reality of The New Order mod, where the triumphant Third Reich (GGR), Empire of Japan (DNT) and the United States (US) compete for influence in a fictional three-sided Cold War. The game can be played by three players only, each controlling one of the super powers.

Base rules of the Twilight Struggle are still there - the world map is split into regions, regions contain different countries. Players in turn play unique event cards from their hand, either for the event written to occur or to conduct operations - place their influence, perform coup attempts or realign countries from under opponents' control. Each event is associated with a player, and if you play a card not associated with you the event must occur, thus creating strategic choices on when to best take a hit by playing an opponent's card.

Twilight Struggle cards are split into three eras - Early War, Mid War and Late War. Each era has its own deck of events. For TNO, I've decided to include everything that happened before the game start into the Early War. Everything that happens during the 60s of TNO is Mid War and the 70s and potential future events of TNO2 are Late War.

In Twilight Struggle, cards are either US-associated, USSR-associated or neutral, but for Twilight Order I've had to create a whole new category of cards. Some cards can be associated with two players at the same time, meaning either they're bad for the third player, or only beneficial to two of them. You can see examples of some cards and their effects below.

The China Card is a special card featured in Twilight Struggle that is passed between players each time it is played, showing the complex nature of Cold War diplomacy of China. In Twilight Order, this honour passes to Italy. GGR starts with the Italy Card, the last remains of a
strained alliance. After play it passes to an opponent of choice. But the lore of TNO Italy is too rich to diminish it to effects of a single card. Thus, one of the new mechanics introduced are the Italian events. Every time the Italy Card is played, you must draw a card from a deck of events. Most of them are beneficial to the current player, but some may force them to make additional choices in how they want to play the Italy Card or even force them to make some concessions. You can see the Italy Card as it is below.

Those who have played Twilight Struggle may have a question: "What are markers?"

Country markers are another feature that is included to represent the rich world of TNO. There are several types of markers, most importantly they are:

* Military Presence
* Italy (denoting the Italian sphere of Influence)
* Socialist

Now I'm gonna explain each of them separately.

Military Presence (MP) is a new feature meant to represent the more involved and hostile Cold War of the world of TNO and also to break the Twilight Struggle meta where coups are almost always the most efficient action to perform.

Each player can use their operations to add Military Presence to a country they control, solidifying their control and diminishing effects of opponent coups and war events. They're heavily tied to a lot of events, as you may see in some examples.

Italy markers are self-explanatary: as Italian sphere of influence increases or diminishes by play of the Italy card, so are those markers added or removed from the map.

Socialist markers represent the countries where one of the various socialist or communist movements have taken hold. They affect the game in a huge way, but I'm gonna leave that for another time.

Another important difference from the Twilight Struggle is Military Operations. Instead of being just a track to count the amount of coups the players performed, Military Operations are now a resource that you have to manage. They are spent on Military Presence, coups and war events. You have to calculate how much you can afford to invest, because you may find yourself unable to peform a key coup attempt or to participate in a war event if you spend them too quickly. Furthermore, Military Operations determine the turn order, which changes every turn, unlike the fixed system of Twilight Struggle where the Soviets always go first.

Another huge feature is, of course, the Super events. Super events are an integral part of TNO and I couldn't have created a board game without including them in some way. Twilight Order features various Super events that change the rules of the game for a duration of a turn. Some of them include the Yasuda Crisis, the Bürgerkrieg, Great Asian War, South African War, and more.

I will leave you with a teaser of another unique feature of The Twilight Order, which is the Russian Reunification. Of course no TNO board game can exist without representing the fan-favourite warlords of the Russian Anarchy. In Twilight Order Russian Reunification is an involved mini-game. Each warlord has several cards and a super event associated with them, that will heavily impact the Late War gameplay. Most of the warlords are planned to be represented, with some non-unifiers even. I will talk in-depth about the mechanics of Russian Reunification in a different dev diary.

Thank you for reading, and huge thanks to the developers of TNO, both past and present for keeping this engaging world alive and also to Ananda Gupta and Jason Matthews for designing one of my favourite board games ever.

I'm looking forward to feedback from you all. For those who have played Twilight Struggle and are feeling inspired, I'm open to card and event

balance of power would not change if Free France won in France, as Germany would soon re-invade.

This brings us to point two: the only change in the balance of power can come from within. A democratic, open-minded, and antagonistic Vichy France is the best shot for U.S. interests in making a difference. You do NOT need a country to join the OFN to contain Germany; a neutral country with a real, standing, conventional army that you can utilize as a proxy to bleed Germany dry in the event it invades is far more beneficial to U.S. interests than a rump state that almost entirely relies on U.S. investment. Free France is not unique because it's a democracy; Pinay's France is a democracy. Free France is not unique in that it's antagonistic to Germany or can serve U.S. interests; Pinay's France is both antagonistic and can serve U.S. interests. No matter how distasteful it is, if you're going to argue in the framework of national interest, it's time to cast off your vibes and actually work within that framework.

# Concluding Remarks

This is a cry for the community to engage with the game's scenario. Blue map painting is funny, whatever. It makes you feel good.

I get that.

But when you start talking with others, arrogantly arguing in favor of a colonialist power that has no real strategic value to the United States and claiming "WELL AT LEAST IT'S BETTER THAN THE OTHER GUY" under the thin veneer of national interest, it's better to think through what you're arguing and consider the strategic context you're talking about. You are wanting what is essentially bad content that distract from far more interesting stories.

Stop humiliating yourselves in defending Free France. Go support Liberia, which is horrible but not as bad and in your best interests, absurdly support the WAA, or support the PALF.
