Parents are putting a lot pressure on their children to succeed.
What are the reasons for this?
Is it a positive or negative development?
Parents today are increasingly placing immense pressure on their children to succeed. This phenomenon can be attributed to several factors, ranging from societal expectations to economic realities. While some argue that this can be beneficial in terms of fostering resilience and ambition, I believe the potential psychological costs outweigh the advantages.
One significant reason behind the heightened pressure is the increasingly competitive nature of modern society. In today’s globalized world, the job market is becoming more demanding, with employers seeking highly skilled candidates who have excelled academically. As a result, parents feel compelled to push their children to achieve top grades, believing that academic success is the primary gateway to stable and well-paying employment. This is particularly evident in my country, Uzbekistan, where millions of students vie for limited seats in prestigious universities. A failure to secure a place can be seen as a missed opportunity for upward mobility, further intensifying parental anxiety.
Another key factor is the influence of social comparison, driven largely by social media and peer pressure. Many parents, consciously or unconsciously, compare their children’s accomplishments to those of their peers. This comparison fuels a desire for their children to outperform others, often equating their success with social status. Parents may feel that if their child lags behind, it could reflect poorly on their parenting skills or diminish their family’s reputation. In some cultures, this can be observed as a matter of pride and honor, pushing parents to apply additional pressure.
From a positive perspective, such pressure can instill a strong work ethic and determination in children. When children are encouraged to aim high, they may develop persistence and a drive to overcome obstacles. Take some of my successful students in IELTS like Sevara, who have attributed their success to the high expectations set by their parents. This mindset can help children develop a sense of responsibility and discipline, which are essential life skills. Moreover, children who succeed academically or professionally are more likely to experience financial stability in the future, which can contribute to their overall well-being.
In my opinion, however, the negative consequences of excessive pressure cannot be overlooked. The constant demand to perform can lead to significant mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and burnout. In extreme cases, children may develop a fear of failure, resulting in a reluctance to take risks or explore their passions. For example, research has shown that students in high-pressure academic environments in some western countries often report high levels of stress and feelings of inadequacy. This psychological toll can undermine their long-term happiness, suggesting that the costs of parental pressure may surpass the perceived benefits.
In conclusion, while parents may have valid reasons for pushing their children to succeed, particularly in a competitive society, the overall impact of such pressure is a mixed one. Although it can motivate children to achieve their potential and secure a better future, I think the potential for psychological harm is more significant.

It is a good idea for people to continue working in their old age, if it is possible for them to do so.
Do you agree or disagree?
As people age, the question of whether they should continue working has long been a thorny one. While there are arguments in favor of elderly individuals remaining in the workforce, such as maintaining a sense of purpose and ensuring financial stability, I disagree with the idea of encouraging older people to work in their later years because retirement offers numerous benefits, such as improved health, opportunities for personal fulfillment, and the chance for younger generations to contribute to the workforce.
On the one hand, there are some valid reasons why working in old age could be beneficial. For many older individuals, continuing employment provides a sense of purpose and routine, which can be vital for maintaining mental well-being. For instance, a retired teacher might miss the intellectual stimulation and social interactions provided by their profession, and working part-time could help address this gap. Additionally, with life expectancy increasing, financial pressures may prompt the elderly to remain employed. The cost of living and healthcare, particularly in countries with inadequate social security systems, can make it difficult for seniors to enjoy a comfortable retirement without a steady income. Thus, for some, working beyond the traditional retirement age might appear to be a sensible option.
However, despite these potential advantages, I believe that continuing to work in old age can have several negative consequences, one of which shows that older workers are more prone to physical and mental health issues, such as chronic diseases, fatigue, or cognitive decline, which could be exacerbated by work-related stress. Take a study conducted by the World Health Organization, in which people over 65 experience higher levels of stress-related illnesses when they continue to work. This demonstrates that prolonging one's working life may actually worsen health outcomes and diminish the quality of life in retirement years. In contrast, retirement offers a much-needed break and allows older individuals to prioritize their health, engage in recreational activities, and enjoy time with family.
Furthermore, the opportunity cost of older people remaining in the workforce is often overlooked. When senior citizens occupy jobs that could otherwise be filled by younger individuals, it may hinder the career development of younger generations. In competitive job markets, allowing older employees to continue working can create a bottleneck, leaving younger, potentially more innovative workers without opportunities to advance or gain employment. For example, in many industries, younger workers possess cutting-edge technological skills that are crucial in the modern workplace. If older workers remain employed, it may prevent businesses from harnessing the full potential of a younger, more tech-savvy workforce. In this context, encouraging older people to retire could facilitate intergenerational renewal and productivity gains.
Finally, though working in old age may provide financial security, there are alternative solutions to address this concern without prolonging an individual's working life. Governments can, and should, enhance pension schemes, provide subsidized healthcare, and offer social programs tailored to elderly citizens, allowing them to retire without facing economic hardship. Countries like Denmark and the Netherlands have implemented robust welfare systems that ensure senior citizens can enjoy financial independence in retirement without needing to work. These examples reflect that with proper policy support, financial security can be achieved without expecting the elderly to continue working well into their golden years.

In conclusion, while some may argue that working in old age can provide purpose and financial stability, the potential drawbacks far outweigh these benefits. Older individuals face health risks, block younger workers' advancement, and may continue working only due to insufficient social safety nets. Rather than encouraging work in old age, society should focus on providing the necessary support to allow the elderly to enjoy a well-deserved retirement.

The pie charts depict a comparative analysis of energy production from non-renewable and renewable power sources in a particular country for the years 1995 and 2005.
Overall, the majority of energy was generated from non-renewable sources such as gas, coal, and petrol; one of these, petrol, saw a pronounced decline over the recorded 10-year period. In contrast, the smallest proportions of energy were produced from nuclear and 'unspecified' sources, both of which doubled by 2005.
In 1995, coal, gas, and petrol each constituted approximately one-third of the total energy production, with respective shares of 29.80%, 29.63%, and 29.27%. Conversely, energy derived from nuclear power and other sources collectively accounted for around 11.30%, comprising 6.40% from nuclear and 4.90% from other sources.
By 2005, the contributions from coal and gas had each increased by about 1%, while petrol usage experienced a notable decline of approximately 10%. In stark contrast, the share of energy produced from nuclear power rose to 10.10%, reflecting an increase of 3.7% over the decade. Similarly, the "other" category also demonstrated significant growth, rising to 9.10%.

In many countries, the number of animals and plants is declining.
What are the causes?
What can be done to solve this problem?
In many parts of the world, there is a notable decline in the numbers of both animals and plants. While this alarming trend is primarily driven by human activities, I contend that proactive governmental intervention and robust conservation initiatives are essential to mitigate and ultimately reverse this crisis.
One significant factor contributing to the dwindling populations of flora and fauna is urbanization. As the global population expands at an unprecedented rate, the urgent need for urban expansion and the establishment of new cities leads to the encroachment on vital ecosystems, such as forests, grasslands, and wetlands. This relentless development not only fragments habitats but also displaces countless species that rely on these natural environments for survival.
Another critical driver of this decline is deforestation. The global demand for timber, fueled by construction, paper production, and other industrial uses, results in the widespread logging of forests each year. This destruction not only clears essential habitats but also disrupts the intricate food webs that sustain wildlife. Consequently, many species are forced from their native habitats, suffering from the loss of both food sources and breeding grounds, which ultimately contributes to their declining populations.
To combat this pressing issue, governments must take decisive action. One of the first measures should be the establishment of protected areas, such as national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. These designated zones provide crucial refuge for various species, shielding them from human encroachment and destructive activities. Additionally, such areas can serve as vital breeding grounds, enabling populations to recover and thrive.
Moreover, reforestation and habitat restoration efforts can prove highly effective in reversing ecological damage. By replanting native trees and reintroducing indigenous species, we can restore lost ecosystems and enhance biodiversity. For instance, successful restoration projects in the Amazon rainforest have not only rejuvenated deforested areas but also facilitated the return of numerous animal species that had previously vanished. Such models of success can and should be replicated in other regions facing similar challenges.
In conclusion, urbanization and deforestation are the primary drivers behind the alarming decline in animal and plant populations. It is imperative for governments to implement protective measures and invest in habitat restoration initiatives to ensure the survival of our planet's biodiversity. Only through such comprehensive efforts can we hope to preserve the delicate balance of our ecosystems for future generations.

Task 1: The pie charts below show the percentage of five kinds of books sold by a bookseller between 1972 and 2012. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant
The three pie charts illustrate the changing distribution of sales for various genres of books, measured as percentages, over a 40-year period.
Overall, adult fiction became increasingly dominant in sales throughout the period, followed by children’s fiction, which also showed a steady increase. In contrast, the other three categories—biography, travel, and other genres—saw declines in their share of total sales by the 21st century.
In detail, adult fiction and children's fiction began the period at the same level, each accounting for 20% of total sales. By 1992, adult fiction had increased slightly faster than children’s fiction, with sales rising to 25% and 22%, respectively. By the end of the period, adult fiction had become the leading genre, representing nearly half of all sales (45%), while children’s fiction had grown to 25%.
Conversely, the sales of travel, biography, and other genres declined over time. "Other genres," despite holding the largest share at the start (25%), experienced a significant drop, falling to 12% by 2012. Travel books saw a modest increase from 15% in 1972 to 18% in 1992, but this trend reversed, ending at 10% in 2012. The most notable decline occurred in biography, which dropped sharply from 20% in 1972 to just 8% by 2012, making it the least popular genre by the end of the period.

The two plans illustrate the layout of a bookstore in 2000 and how it appears at present. Overall, the bookstore has evolved from a purely book-focused space into a more multifunctional venue, now offering places for customers to sit and a café for refreshments, while the core sections of the bookstore, such as fiction, non-fiction, and other book genres, remain largely unchanged.
In 2000, the bookstore primarily consisted of bookshelves categorized into distinct genres. Upon entering from the bottom, the service desk was located to the right, adjacent to the non-fiction section which occupied the right-hand wall. The middle of the store housed shelves for cookery, hobbies, and art, while travel books and new arrivals were placed near the entrance. The left-hand side was dedicated to fiction books.
Currently, the bookstore retains many of its original sections but with several key changes. The fiction and non-fiction sections are now smaller, with the former remaining in its original position, while the latter has been reduced and relocated to the top-left corner. The central area, previously occupied by cookery, hobbies, and art sections, now contains tables and chairs for customers. The cookery, hobbies, art, and travel books have been shifted slightly to the left. Furthermore, a café counter has been introduced at the far right side, replacing part of the non-fiction area, adding a new dimension to the store’s services.

Some argue that music mainly serves as a way for individuals to reduce their stress and anxiety.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Many believe that the primary function of music is to alleviate stress and anxiety in individuals. While I acknowledge that this is a significant role of music, I firmly contend that its most profound purpose lies in its capacity to elevate the human spirit and provide deep emotional enrichment.
One of the strongest arguments for music as a means of relaxation is its widespread use as a tool for stress relief. A vast number of people engage with music to unwind after demanding days at work or school, turning to their favorite genres to escape the pressures of modern life. Scientific evidence supports this notion, with numerous studies indicating that music can lower cortisol levels and blood pressure, both of which are key markers of stress reduction. For example, classical music has been shown to induce a calming effect on listeners, while more upbeat genres like pop or jazz can help individuals de-stress through rhythmic engagement. Nonetheless, while this function is important, it only scratches the surface of music’s broader impact.
More importantly, music transcends mere stress relief by offering a profound and transformative emotional experience. It is not only a tool for relaxation but also a medium that conveys complex emotions and ideas, allowing individuals to connect with their deeper feelings. Iconic songs like Michael Jackson's They Do Not Really Care About Us or Eminem's Evil Deeds move beyond entertainment and relaxation, presenting listeners with thought-provoking messages about peace, social justice, and human unity. These songs shape how we perceive the world, often leading us to reconsider our views on life and society. Through its powerful melodies and lyrics, music has the unique ability to elevate listeners’ perspectives, turning everyday experiences into something more meaningful and reflective.
Moreover, music’s ability to enrich life goes beyond just the positive, uplifting experiences it provides. It also allows individuals to confront and understand the darker aspects of the human condition. Songs about heartbreak, grief, or addiction often resonate with listeners who may be going through similar struggles. For instance, artists like Adele or Tupac Shakur have written about personal pain, and in doing so, they have given others the strength to process their own emotions. This form of emotional catharsis is invaluable because it offers listeners a way to explore difficult feelings, ultimately leading to greater self-awareness and personal growth.
In conclusion, while music undeniably plays a role in reducing stress and anxiety, I believe its true power lies in its ability to uplift, enrich, and even transform lives. It acts as a comprehensive art form that speaks to the full range of human emotions, both positive and negative. Music is not just a means of relaxation, but a pathway to deeper emotional and intellectual engagement, making it one of the most powerful artistic expressions in human history.

The line chart illustrates the percentage of internet users in three countries—the USA, Canada, and Mexico—over a ten-year period from 1999 to 2009.
Overall, all three countries experienced an upward trend in the proportion of internet users throughout the period. While the USA initially had the highest percentage of internet users, Canada eventually surpassed it, recording the most significant growth. It is also worth mentioning that Mexico consistently had the lowest figures, albeit it showed a steady increase.
In detail, the USA and Canada displayed a staggering rise during the decade. At the commencement of the period, the USA led with just over 20% of its population using the internet, while Canada followed with a figure that was more than 10 percentage points lower. However, both countries experienced a rapid rise in their internet user base, with Canada overtaking the USA in 2003. By the end of the period, the USA’s percentage of internet users had grown to 80%, whereas Canada reached 100%, indicating complete saturation.
On the other hand, Mexico exhibited a more gradual increase. Starting at below 10% in 1999, the proportion of internet users in Mexico tripled by 2007. Although growth slowed thereafter, it still rose to around 39% by 2009.

The bar chart presents the forecasted number of visitors from three distinct nationalities—Americans, Canadians, and Mexicans—to four European cities (Rome, Madrid, Paris, and Liverpool) in 2018.
Overall, the chart reveals a consistent trend across all cities, with Americans invariably being the largest group of visitors, followed by Canadians, while Mexicans formed the smallest contingent in each location. Madrid emerged as the most favored destination for all nationalities, whereas Liverpool attracted the fewest tourists.
In greater detail, Madrid boasted the highest number of visitors across all three nationalities. Americans were the most prevalent, with 100,000 expected visitors, trailed by 80,000 Canadians. Mexicans constituted the smallest group, with approximately 70,000 visitors. A similar hierarchy was observed in Rome, though with more pronounced differences. Americans again dominated with 80,000 visitors, nearly double the Canadian count of 45,000. Mexicans represented the least numerous group in Rome, totaling just 20,000, which accounted for a mere quarter of the American figure.
Paris received fewer visitors than Madrid but exceeded Rome’s numbers, maintaining a comparable pattern of distribution. American visitors were estimated at 68,000, closely followed by Mexicans at 67,000, while Canadians numbered 60,000. Liverpool, which was the least visited city, recorded notably lower figures. It was projected to host 50,000 American tourists, while the number of Canadians and Mexicans was significantly smaller, at 30,000 and 20,000, respectively.
