☘️CAUSE AND EFFECT essay
Parents are putting a lot pressure on their children to succeed.

What are the reasons for this?
Is it a positive or negative development?

Parents today are increasingly placing immense pressure on their children to succeed. This phenomenon can be attributed to several factors, ranging from societal expectations to economic realities. While some argue that this can be beneficial in terms of fostering resilience and ambition, I believe the potential psychological costs outweigh the advantages.

One significant reason behind the heightened pressure is the increasingly competitive nature of modern society. In today’s globalized world, the job market is becoming more demanding, with employers seeking highly skilled candidates who have excelled academically. As a result, parents feel compelled to push their children to achieve top grades, believing that academic success is the primary gateway to stable and well-paying employment. This is particularly evident in my country, Uzbekistan, where millions of students vie for limited seats in prestigious universities. A failure to secure a place can be seen as a missed opportunity for upward mobility, further intensifying parental anxiety.

Another key factor is the influence of social comparison, driven largely by social media and peer pressure. Many parents, consciously or unconsciously, compare their children’s accomplishments to those of their peers. This comparison fuels a desire for their children to outperform others, often equating their success with social status. Parents may feel that if their child lags behind, it could reflect poorly on their parenting skills or diminish their family’s reputation. In some cultures, this can be observed as a matter of pride and honor, pushing parents to apply additional pressure.

From a positive perspective, such pressure can instill a strong work ethic and determination in children. When children are encouraged to aim high, they may develop persistence and a drive to overcome obstacles. Take some of my successful students in IELTS like Sevara, who have attributed their success to the high expectations set by their parents. This mindset can help children develop a sense of responsibility and discipline, which are essential life skills. Moreover, children who succeed academically or professionally are more likely to experience financial stability in the future, which can contribute to their overall well-being.

In my opinion, however, the negative consequences of excessive pressure cannot be overlooked. The constant demand to perform can lead to significant mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and burnout. In extreme cases, children may develop a fear of failure, resulting in a reluctance to take risks or explore their passions. For example, research has shown that students in high-pressure academic environments in some western countries often report high levels of stress and feelings of inadequacy. This psychological toll can undermine their long-term happiness, suggesting that the costs of parental pressure may surpass the perceived benefits.

In conclusion, while parents may have valid reasons for pushing their children to succeed, particularly in a competitive society, the overall impact of such pressure is a mixed one. Although it can motivate children to achieve their potential and secure a better future, I think the potential for psychological harm is more significant.

☘️AGREE OR DISAGREE essay
It is a good idea for people to continue working in their old age, if it is possible for them to do so.

Do you agree or disagree?

As people age, the question of whether they should continue working has long been a thorny one. While there are arguments in favor of elderly individuals remaining in the workforce, such as maintaining a sense of purpose and ensuring financial stability, I disagree with the idea of encouraging older people to work in their later years because retirement offers numerous benefits, such as improved health, opportunities for personal fulfillment, and the chance for younger generations to contribute to the workforce.

On the one hand, there are some valid reasons why working in old age could be beneficial. For many older individuals, continuing employment provides a sense of purpose and routine, which can be vital for maintaining mental well-being. For instance, a retired teacher might miss the intellectual stimulation and social interactions provided by their profession, and working part-time could help address this gap. Additionally, with life expectancy increasing, financial pressures may prompt the elderly to remain employed. The cost of living and healthcare, particularly in countries with inadequate social security systems, can make it difficult for seniors to enjoy a comfortable retirement without a steady income. Thus, for some, working beyond the traditional retirement age might appear to be a sensible option.

However, despite these potential advantages, I believe that continuing to work in old age can have several negative consequences, one of which shows that older workers are more prone to physical and mental health issues, such as chronic diseases, fatigue, or cognitive decline, which could be exacerbated by work-related stress. Take a study conducted by the World Health Organization, in which people over 65 experience higher levels of stress-related illnesses when they continue to work. This demonstrates that prolonging one's working life may actually worsen health outcomes and diminish the quality of life in retirement years. In contrast, retirement offers a much-needed break and allows older individuals to prioritize their health, engage in recreational activities, and enjoy time with family.

Furthermore, the opportunity cost of older people remaining in the workforce is often overlooked. When senior citizens occupy jobs that could otherwise be filled by younger individuals, it may hinder the career development of younger generations. In competitive job markets, allowing older employees to continue working can create a bottleneck, leaving younger, potentially more innovative workers without opportunities to advance or gain employment. For example, in many industries, younger workers possess cutting-edge technological skills that are crucial in the modern workplace. If older workers remain employed, it may prevent businesses from harnessing the full potential of a younger, more tech-savvy workforce. In this context, encouraging older people to retire could facilitate intergenerational renewal and productivity gains.

Finally, though working in old age may provide financial security, there are alternative solutions to address this concern without prolonging an individual's working life. Governments can, and should, enhance pension schemes, provide subsidized healthcare, and offer social programs tailored to elderly citizens, allowing them to retire without facing economic hardship. Countries like Denmark and the Netherlands have implemented robust welfare systems that ensure senior citizens can enjoy financial independence in retirement without needing to work. These examples reflect that with proper policy support, financial security can be achieved without expecting the elderly to continue working well into their golden years.

In conclusion, while some may argue that working in old age can provide purpose and financial stability, the potential drawbacks far outweigh these benefits. Older individuals face health risks, block younger workers' advancement, and may continue working only due to insufficient social safety nets. Rather than encouraging work in old age, society should focus on providing the necessary support to allow the elderly to enjoy a well-deserved retirement.
