The young man's desire for the surgery and female lifestyle disappeared completely."

The basis for spiritual bypassing. As Jung, Gurdjieff, Sri Aurobindo, and other masters have said, you need a healthy integrated ego [which implies shadow work...and it is not easy work, to say the least for it is painful and messy to own your triggers and projections] and consciously separate from the consensus state of the masses before entering deeper esoteric work and spiritualizing the being.

Many people try to bypass and skip this step being drawn to pop spiritual New Age stuff or mainstream Eckart-Tolle-type "spirituality" and hence their unconscious shadow grows deeper and stronger, and so does their inflated neurotic ego. All this "bypassing" also has detrimental effects on the collective unconscious, not just the personal unconscious. As within, so without. As Above, so Below.
