OPINION PIECE: On the 26th May 1946 over seven million people went to the polls in the old Czechoslovakia. It would be forty five years before they would do so again. In February 1948 one hundred thousand people occupied Wenceslas Sq to listen to Klement Gottwald effectively seize power on behalf of the Communist Party, the KSČ. How could that happen in a small conservative nation, traditionally democratic, relatively prosperous, religious, nationalistic and family orientated. They had been through a rough time during the Nazi occupation but compared to neighbouring Poland there was very little war damage, a relatively low civilian death rate if you exclude the Jews and the large German minority of Sudetenlanders who were held accountable for the German occupation had been forcibly expelled. Czechoslovakia should be ready to enjoy a bright future. In the 1946 election the Communists got 31% of the vote, opinion polls had given them 39%. Regardless it was an impressive achievement and as the largest party they were invited to form the government. Compare this to the Sinn Fein of today. Their use of language was moderate, they wanted to reform democracy, to improve the system from within, to work collaboratively. The use of Marxist rhetoric was absent. No mention of Sovietisation or collectivisation. It almost sounded as if they just wanted to be helpful and the honest good natured electorate who didn’t want to hear about conspiracies just went along with it. The communist party had energy and a vision and a ruthlessness to make it work. They rapidly mopped up the opposition by putting people sympathetic to communism in charge. Zdenēk Fierlinger of the Social Democrats, ČSSD, was a typical fellow traveler and amalgamated the Social Democrats with the communists. Imagine Sinn Fein and Fianna Fáil, that would not be a contest. The corrupt tired worn out Fianna Fáil would be used as window dressing to play at pretending democracy. While in power the communists packed all the positions of advisors and functionaries with their own people. In Ireland this translates into government advisers, outside experts and of course the NGO’s. In Czechoslovakia the democrats saw what was happening and resigned from the government to force a general election that the increasingly unpopular communist led government was sure to loose. This is where the true Marxist ideology emerged. The communists had no intention of contesting an election that they would loose. Would Sinn Fein go quietly in a similar scenario. The KSČ, the communists brought one hundred thousand people onto the streets armed with clubs and firearms. Seven million other citizens remained at home. They choose not to defend democracy. In fairness they didn’t realise the magnitude of the takeover, of the coup d’etat. But it was all over for forty five years. Sinn Fein is menacingly close to forming the next government. Their language is as impeccable as their recently acquired manners. They will cajole, persuade, bribe and intimidate their way to power. Like the KSČ they only have to do it once because they too are not going to go into opposition. We are on the brink of a totalitarian takeover, using the language of equality and reasonableness to undermine opposition, they must be exposed and they must be opposed to preserve our democratic tradition of going to the polls.
