OPINION PIECE: Do we remember the brown envelopes, the ‘dig outs’ and of course Paddy the Plasterer, the fictitious tradesman last seen at a dinner in Manchester and not Charlie Chawke’s non fictitious horse. It all had a bad smell to it that has lingered and the common denominator was Bertie Ahern. I am sure Mr Ahern is not a bad guy, he simply found himself in bad situations and I am sure if Paddy the Plasterer and a pile of others were to give you a bulging envelope as a dig out you might succumb, particularly if you were a member of a certain political party. We all hoped that those bad old days and the principal actors were all gone but Bertie Ahern has emerged from the political wilderness to give us some advice. I am prepared to listen because you have to respect experience whether you agree with it or not. Mr Ahern, speaking at a General Liam Lynch memorial event at Kilcrumper, speculated that if Sinn Fein were to form the next government they would have difficult choices to make regarding coalition partners. He recollected that Fianna Fáil went into coalition with the Progressive Democrats and Fine Gael with Democratic Left, both unlikely combinations that stuck together when put together. The comparison is not valid, those were democratic parties that respected the wish of the electorate, parties that would exit office as seamlessly as enter office. Sinn Fein is not made for opposition and they know it. As of now their language is soft, they speak of reforming democracy, equality, working responsibly with others and moving a new and modern Ireland forward. Are people being lulled into a false sense of security by a paramilitary party still organised on ruthless militaristic lines, with undisclosed agendas and with a real leadership that is invisible to everybody except an inner core. Supposing a weak and corrupt mainstream political party went into coalition with them, would they survived or would they simply be subsumed into a Marxist Leninist terror world where dissent would not be tolerated and opposition liquidated out of sight and out of mind. The compliant press will do what the compliant press has been good at doing, supporting government and failing to hold them to account. Already many journalists are pro Sinn Fein and anyway a Sinn Fein emergency powers act would copperfasten their rule. The Marxist agenda would kick in, nationalisation of the housing stock, continuation of mass inward migration of people from countries without a democratic tradition, and the full embracing of LGBQT, Transgender, abortion rights, all protected by their version of hate speech laws. The emphasis would be on their vision of a globalist Marxist world and Ireland is one link in a chain that they hope will get bigger and bigger. But it would be the end of democracy as sure as it would be the end of any political party that would be foolish enough to go into coalition with them. It is a pity that Mr Ahern didn’t use his vast and wayward experience to call it as it is, to warn against having any dealings with a party that operates by a different set of rules, a dangerous toxic mix of old style Cold War rhetoric and globalist soft Marxism where the overreaching state reaches into every aspect of your personal and professional life, where control is the end point and as happened behind the Iron Curtain if you kept your head down, if you were non curious and cultivated a disposition of supportiveness for the regime you could live a life in which you would own nothing and be happy. And you would never have to worry about the next election because their won’t be any. Keep democracy, keep Sinn Fein out.
