The air was thick with tension.
Islavia, usually the life of the party, was the first to snap. She wasn’t a fighter. She was sensitive and easily overwhelmed. When a floorboard creaked behind her in the kitchen, she didn’t scream or run. She collapsed before Carmilla, the hidden assassin, even had to strike. It was a silent, heavy start to the nightmare.
Alistair and Anastasia heard the thud and went into overdrive. As the “protectors” of the friend group, they grabbed whatever they could. A fire poker and a heavy flashlight. They herded the others into the basement, Anastasia keeping her eyes on the shadows while Alistair tried to keep everyone’s breathing down.
In the chaos, Shiloh and Raven accidentally got separated from the group. They spent the night stumbling through the woods in a blind panic. Raven fell down a steep ravine, dragging Shiloh with her. They landed in a hollowed-out log just as Carmilla walked right over them. They didn’t survive because they were smart. They survived because the wind blew the right way and masked their scent. Pure, dumb luck.
Back in the cellar, Isobelze and Sabine clung to each other. They were the “babies” of the group, and even in a life-or-death situation, their innocence made the others protective. Carmilla eventually broke through the door, stalking toward them with terrifying grace. She paused for a split second, looking at how terrified and “too cute to die” they looked huddled together. A momentary lapse in her cold-blooded killer instinct.
That split second was all Alex needed. Alex had been the quietest one all night, watching the exits.
While Alistair and Anastasia were busy being the shield, Alex became the spear. He didn’t hesitate. As Carmilla lunged toward the girls, Alex tackled her with full force, using his momentum to drive her back against the jagged stone foundation. It was brutal, quick, and final.
The Aftermath:
As the sun rose, the six survivors sat on the porch in a daze. The house was quiet, but the empty spot where Islavia should have been felt like a permanent shadow over the group.
