Magister was designed by the Italian maestro, Aldo Novarese, for the iconic Nebiolo foundry in 1966. Following the wild success of Eurostile, Novarese shifted his focus from a graphic sans-serif to a more bookish text genre. Magister was a direct response to the ubiquitous Times New Roman, and was intended to add a sense of style, grace, and eleganza to Stanley Morison’s more utilitarian forms. Despite initial excitement around the typeface, its story was cut short after the foundry ran into financial hardship in the 1970s and was eventually purchased by Fiat to take over their factories. In the turmoil, a majority of Nebiolo’s typefaces, including Magister, were lost to history..
