Thomas Jefferson
13 April 1743 – 4 July 1826
An American Architect who was the third President of the US (1801 to 1809), the principal author of the 'Declaration of Independence.
He discovered Jeffersonian Architecture, which is an American form of neo-Classicism and/or neo-Palladianism. These include his home (Monticello), his retreat (Poplar Forest), the university he founded (University of Virginia), and his designs for the homes of friends and political allies (notably Barboursville).
One characteristic which typifies Jefferson's architecture is the use of the octagon and octagonal forms in his designs. Jefferson employed them as a design motif—halving them, elongating them, and employing them in whole as with the dome of Monticello, or the entire house at Poplar Forest.
