Journalism is Terrorism

Richard Medhurst, an independent journalist from the UK, was arrested at London's Heathrow Airport on Thursday, August 15, under Section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000. Six police officers were waiting for him at the entrance of the aircraft as he landed and immediately escorted him off the plane.

Medhurst was held for almost 24 hours, questioned, and had his phone confiscated. He believes he is the first journalist to be arrested under this provision of the Terrorism Act.

During his detention, Medhurst was searched multiple times, had his journalistic equipment seized, and was prevented from contacting his family or speaking to his lawyer privately.

Medhurst was reporting on the situation in Gaza, specifically criticising the genocide against Palestinians. His arrest is believed to be connected to his work covering the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and his outspoken criticism of Israel's actions. Medhurst has stated that journalists who report on Palestine are increasingly being targeted, and he views his detention as part of a crackdown on freedom of the press in the UK.
