Al Gore's 2006 propaganda film "An Inconvenient Truth" has been criticised for containing errors and exaggerations in its presentation of climate change.
A British High Court judge identified nine scientific errors in the film, some of which were found to have arisen in the context of alarmism and exaggeration to support Gore's agenda.
1. The film said a sea-level rise of up to 20 feet would be caused by melting of either west Antarctica or Greenland in the near future, which the judge ruled as "distinctly alarmist”.
2. The film claimed that low-lying inhabited Pacific atolls are already being inundated because of anthropogenic global warming, which the judge found to be wrong.
3. It stated that global warming could stop the Gulf Stream, which the judge found to be a scientific impossibility.
4. The film suggested that the drying up of Lake Chad was a prime example of a catastrophic result of global warming, which the judge found to be misleading.
5. It claimed that Hurricane Katrina was caused by global warming, which the judge ruled as baseless.
6. The film asserted that polar bears were drowning due to melting ice, which the judge found to be unsupported by the scientific evidence.
7. It stated that the snows of Mount Kilimanjaro were disappearing due to global warming, which the judge found to be speculative.
8. The film claimed that the temperature increase in the last 100 years was unusual and was caused by increases in carbon dioxide, which the judge found to be an overstatement.
9. It suggested that the disappearance of snow on Mt. Kilimanjaro was expressly attributable to global warming, which the judge found to be speculative.
Despite the inaccuracies, the film won an Academy Award in 2006 for best feature-length documentary and Al Gore was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
The British High Court ruled that the film could be shown in schools as part of climate change programming.
