Tobes has put in a mealy-mouthed, I defend your right to free speech so long as I get to define what free speech is and as long as it accords with government regs, apologia for sacked Guardian cartoonist Steve Bell.
Here is what he says on Twitter: I don’t think the Guardian should have fired Steve Bell over his cartoon of Netanyahu, wearing boxing gloves, hovering with a scalpel over a Gaza-shaped area of his stomach. Bell says it was a reference to a famous cartoon by David Levine of LBJ pointing to a Vietnam-shaped scar on his stomach and Bell made that explicit by writing “After David Levine” on the cartoon. I think we should accept that explanation.
To claim Bell was making a reference to Shylock, and therefore the cartoon was antisemitic, doesn’t make sense because Shylock in the Merchant of Venice at no point tries to remove – or threatens to remove – a pound of flesh from his *own* body. It’s a forfeit he wants Antonio to pay if he can’t repay him. In addition, the area of flesh Netanyahu is about to remove in the Bell cartoon weighs considerably more than a pound. All in all, I think Belll should be given the benefit of the doubt.
Freedom of expression is one of the values that is under attack by the enemies of western liberal democracy and in our zeal to defend ourselves we must be careful not sacrifice it.
And here is my Twitter response: How about not sacking any cartoonists at all, ever, even if they are tasteless and wrong? What IS this bollocks where freedom of expression depends on context, and tone, and nuance and history - and special pleading? Free speech is either free or it is not.
