OpenAI launched its first language model capable of reasoning. The model was trained to spend more time thinking about a problem than solving it, creating and following chains of thought just like a person would. Because this is a major change in how AI systems work, OpenAI decided to name it o1 instead of GPT-5.
This is #OpenAI o1, a next generation family of AI models.

The model was trained to spend more time thinking about a problem than solving it, creating and following chains of thought just like a person would. Because this is a major change in how its AI systems work, OpenAI decided to name it o1 instead of GPT-5.
Thanks to these improvements, in a qualifying exam for the International Mathematics Olympiad, o1-preview scores 83% on the International Math Olympiad, while GPT-4o only got 13%. Chain-of-thought reasoning also improves protection against jailbreaking, as the next generation model can reason about the safety rules set by OpenAI.
o1-preview is now available for ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users, as well as select developers using the OpenAI API.
Besides o1-preview, OpenAI is also releasing o1-mini, which performs similarly, especially in STEM-related tasks, to o1-preview while being 80% cheaper to operate and around 3-5x faster. o1-mini is also available to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users, with OpenAI planning to release it to all ChatGPT Free users.

#Qualcomm is looking to acquire #Intel.
Intel, once the biggest manufacturer of processors, is in a bad financial situation. The company lost in technological advantage to rival chip manufacturer TSMC, didn't make a successful chip for the generative AI boom, and has fierce competition from rivals like AMD in the desktop and console market. As a result, since the start of the year its shares have lost nearly 60% of their value.
But, an unlikely company is here to help: Qualcomm, best known for its Snapdragon line of mobile and laptop chips. CEO Cristian Amos is reportedly (via Reuters) involved in five-year negotiations to acquire Intel, and Qualcomm executives were examining its extensive portfolio.
However, this deal is still at an early stage, with no formal offer being made yet.

This is Orion, Meta's latest prototype AR glasses, which were shown during Meta Connect 2024.
Meta invited some people to test it out, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and some VR content creators.
This is Orion, #Meta's latest prototype AR glasses.
The company has been building holographic AR glasses for 10 years, and showed Orion, its latest prototype, at Meta Connect 2024.
Orion has wide displays that have a high picture quality, despite having a portable form factor and only weighing 100 grams. This was achieved by using a new display architecture and custom silicon. Meta also showed some apps built for this new platform.
While this is a prototype that will only be used by Meta and select partners, the company claims that the next iteration will already be ready for consumers.
