Language models power popular AI apps like ChatGPT, and making open models helps AI research and development, since they can be used freely by everyone. Meta has released 2 versions of Llama, while Stability AI, the company behind Stable Diffusion, has developed StableLM. Now, Google has released one too.
Gemma models are developed based on some of the same research and technology as Gemini, which allows them to surpass existing open models like Meta's Llama 2, and are light enough to run on a developer laptop. There are 2 base variants - 2B and 7B - as well as 2 variants optimized for following instructions.
To ensure that Gemma models aren't used for harmful purposes, Google has also released the Responsible Generative AI Toolkit, which helps developers assess risks, adapt the models to their specific uses and analyze how the models perform. Additionally, Google itself has trained the models not to be harmful.
