WHO Calls Special Meeting to Discuss New Covid Variant; UK and Israel Ban Flights From Some African Countries

🦠✈️ @COVID19Up: The World Health Organization is monitoring a new variant with numerous mutations to the spike protein, scheduling a special meeting Friday to discuss what it may mean for vaccines and treatments.

Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s technical lead on Covid-19, said there are fewer than 100 full genome sequences of the new mutation.

The variant, which has been detected in South Africa, Botswana and Hong Kong, has spread rapidly through the Gauteng province, where SA's largest city of Johannesburg is, which could lead to a rise in positivity rate and numbers happening in the next few days, according to South Africa Minister of Health, Joe Phaahla.

Meanwhile, UK and Israel are taking precautions against the new variant.

UK's Health Secretary Sajid Javid announced in a tweet that all flights from South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini are being suspended and UK travellers must quarantine.

Israel also announced that South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia and Eswatini were added to the “red” list, which bans Israelis from traveling to such countries and makes citizens of such nations not eligible to enter Israel. Israelis returning home from those countries would be required to spend between seven and 14 days in a quarantine hotel after arrival.

Moderna to "Rapidly Advance" Omicron-Specific COVID-19 Vaccine as Pfizer Says It Can Have One Ready in 100 Days

🇺🇸💉@COVID19Up: Moderna announced on Friday (Nov. 26) it will "rapidly advance" an Omicron-specific COVID-19 vaccine candidate.

Meanwhile, Pfizer said it can "produce a tailor-made vaccine against that variant in approximately 100 days."

The stock market sank as news of the Omicron variant spread around the world. However, shares of Moderna shot up nearly 21%, while shares of Pfizer rose more than 6%.

Virologist Barry Schoub, the head of South Africa’s Ministerial Advisory Committee on COVID-19 vaccines has stated:

“It’s unlikely that it’s going to cause more severe disease, [...] Certainly what we’ve been seeing up to now… the great majority of the patients have been mild. In fact, there hasn’t been a very substantial increase in hospital admissions so far.”

Translation, we have not seen any severe disease yet from it.
