Matthew Perna went to the Capitol on January 6th because he loves America. His family described him as a gentle soul who traveled the world and loved everyone he met by serving them. He loved spending time and connecting with elders in the community.

Matthew was pushed through the open doors of the Capitol by a crowd pressing in behind him. He walked through and left peacefully without harming anyone or damaging anything. For that, he was charged with felony obstruction and three other misdemeanors.

Maligned by the press, falsely accused by the government for "thought crimes", abandoned by friends, family, and community because of January 6th, Matthew felt alone and vulnerable. Matt's family noted the friends and family who stood by him and Matt's appreciation of them.

The government endlessly dragged out his hearings and was unwilling to drop the felony charge. Having lost hope and upon learning that the government would add more points to his felony charge, Matthew felt he could no longer endure the endless torture or the extended prison time. At 37 and the prime of life, Matthew took his life the night of February 25th.

The justice system is corrupt! It has denied a young man the very life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness guaranteed by the Constitution. The justice system and those who control it has denied Matthew the honor and privilege of taking care of his aging father. And of starting a family at the prime of his life.

Matt was a successful businessman, a gentle soul, and a great patriot who peacefully fought for America on January 6th.

The government has taken away all that Matt has, except for one thing. The most important thing. Matt is a believer in Jesus Christ. He is at home with our Father where there is only rest and love. No guilt. No false charges.
