Jake is a veteran who served his country honorably, he was also a man without a criminal history. Chansley served in the U.S. Navy in his late teens, between 2005 and 2007, as a supply clerk seaman apprentice. He earned several accolades during his service, including the National Defense Service Medal.

After being photographed on January 6 at the Capitol, Chansley was arrested on January 9 on federal charges of "knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, and with violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds". He pleaded guilty to a single charge in September, and was sentenced to 41 months (3.4 yr) in prison in November 2021. He served out a portion of his sentence and transferred to a halfway house on March 28, 2023, from which he was released on May 25, 2023.
