Preah Vihear and the Limits of International Law

The deployment of cluster munitions in the vicinity of the 11th-century Preah Vihear temple marks a critical intersection of international law, cultural preservation and modern border security. Reports from the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC), detailing the dispersal of unexploded ordnance (UXO) across 2,300 square kilometres alongside 562 documented points of structural damage to this UNESCO World Heritage site, elevate what might otherwise be localised friction into a matter of international concern.

Comments by Thai official on ‘third round of fighting’ not constructive

Thai defence minister Adul Boonthamcharoen’s statement on the possibility of a third round of fighting between Cambodia and Thailand rests on erroneous, if not intentionally misleading, assumptions and interpretations of the conflict.

He asserts that the any future conflict will be large-scale in nature, when in fact, much of the conflict has been tactical or at the most operational-level aggressions that culminated in a posture where Thai military forces occupied Cambodian territory, in violation of international law and US/ASEAN-brokered ceasefire agreements.

Cambodian products gain ground as ‘Buy Local’ push and Thai boycott reshape domestic market

A growing “Buy Local” movement, coupled with a consumer backlash against Thai imports, is rapidly reshaping Cambodia’s domestic market, with locally made products now capturing an estimated 30 per cent market share, industry leaders said ahead of a major national expo this week.

The shift comes as Cambodia prepares to host the third “Together We Produce, Together We Use Cambodian Products” exhibition from April 9 to 12 at Koh Pich Exhibition and Convention Centre. Apsaras Beyond Borders: Understanding the True Origins of Southeast Asia’s Celestial Dancers

Recent coverage by Khaosod English celebrating the beauty of Apsara carvings at Prasat Sikhoraphum has rightly drawn admiration from readers. These intricately carved celestial maidens stand as a testament to the artistic brilliance of the region. However, such portrayals also invite a deeper reflection on their historical and cultural origins.

Apsaras — the celestial dancers of Hindu–Brahmanic mythology — are not confined to modern national boundaries. Their artistic expression in Southeast Asia is most strongly associated with the legacy of the Khmer Empire, one of the most influential civilisations in the region’s history. At its height, the empire extended far beyond present-day Cambodia, encompassing large parts of what is now northeastern Thailand, including Surin Province.

Since When Did the Thai Military Become the World’s Law Enforcement Officials?

A recent Associated Press tour, orchestrated by the Thai military at the O'Smach Resort on the Thai-Cambodian border, reads like a dispatch from a dystopian novel. Within a sprawling 197-acre complex — equivalent to 150 American football fields — an estimated 10,000 workers operated an industrial-scale cyber-fraud machine.

But look past the abandoned desks littered with American SIM cards and Chinese scripts, and a much darker, far more volatile geopolitical reality emerges.
