Progression..

Working on your property, no matter the size is rewarding in so many ways. For me I think of growth emotionally, physically, and mentally. Of course the obvious is providing food and medicine to you, your family and community.

But more then that, it makes me reflect on things like edge, shapes, imperfections, and impact.

Edge— in permaculture the edge is a really important piece to consider.. it is where fertility is at its peak. It is where two ecosystems connect and collide to provide exchanges. This is where magic happens, where productivity and diversity are foundational. The soil is often richer, the plants and trees will be thriving and you can often witness multiple species of birds, wildlife, microbes, and insects.

So what really is the edge?

Think of the edge of a mountain to a meadow, a forest to the land next to it, water to the land, soil to grass, rocks to grass, pathway to forest, garden bed to pathway, fence to garden bed, rock wall to garden, and urban land to rural land. There are so many more, can you think of any?

If we continue to push the edges on our properties, no matter the size, we can create a multitude of benefits.

Can you see the edges of this newly developed garden bed? Can you see the other trees and plants that will be added and will be pushing the edges out further?

If anyone in the US Midwest (or from further afield!) wants to join me, I will be attending and speaking at the Great Rivers and Lakes Permaculture Institute Convergence being held here in my home state of Michigan, from 28-30 June. I'll be presenting on the 10-year progression of permaculture on my farm in Adrian, MI.

Check out the video tour I just dropped from my visit to @livingtheoffgriddream Where Jaymie Friesen graciously showed me around their 160 Off-Grid Homestead and Permaculture Demonstration Site high up in the mountains of Rock Creek BC.
Sooooooo much amazing content about their experience, land features, challenges and more~
I hope to go back for Part 2 to discuss financing, community and integrating people into operating a fully off-grid lifestyle~

Full video on my you tube channel~ https://youtu.be/lpw0ZLF6BI0 Gimmie a follow there, lots more to come!

🌿🦋little install I finished if anyone is interested. This design was so fun to render and then now install. All the beds are framed with 100 year old logs from an old homestead and then rebar was used to hold them into place.

🪨All the raised beds are huglekultur with multiple layers and components to them. They are filled with Native plants and Native fruit trees, bushes, flowers and ground cover/creepers. They will have triangle shaped boxes for raised strawberries next year.

I grouped specific plants together on purpose to provide habitat for butterflies and bees .. if you didn’t know, they love particular plants and they like them crowded together in a particular fashion.

I look forward to seeing this unfold over the next couple of years and doing more on the property!
