Moldovan President Maia Sandu declared at the first EU-Moldova summit in Chisinau that citizens hold the fate of the country’s EU membership bid in their hands ahead of a critical September parliamentary election. Sandu’s pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) aims to retain its majority against a challenge from the pro-Russian Socialist Party and its allies, amid allegations of Russian interference.

The summit, attended by EU leaders Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa, announced a €270 million ($318 million) Economic Growth Plan tranche and a roaming-free telecom accord to boost EU ties. With Moldova’s 2024 EU referendum narrowly passing at 50.46%, and Sandu’s re-election by a slim margin, the election tests Moldova’s Western pivot against Moscow’s influence.

Rahm Emanuel, former Chicago mayor, called the GOP’s new “megabill” a central issue for the 2026 midterms, warning Democrats not to ignore its impact.

He criticized the bill for offering tax breaks to the wealthy while cutting healthcare for working Americans, highlighting its unpopularity among voters.

Emanuel believes these provisions could become a major vulnerability for Republicans if Democrats focus their messaging on the bill’s most controversial aspects.

Israel concealed Iranian missile strikes on 5 military sites, including a major airbase, during the 12-day war, according to satellite analysis.

Iran hit 40+ infrastructure targets, with 6 missiles breaching defenses, despite 84% interception by IDF and U.S. Israel’s silence and claim of “functional continuity” mask vulnerabilities as $12B war costs strain its economy.

This data shows that Iran’s claims about precision strikes are mostly true. meaning that their weaponry is quite powerful, challenging U.S.-Israel deterrence and demonstrating Israel weakness.

Europe quietly prepares for a potential U.S. troop cut from its 80,000-strong contingent, fearing Trump’s pivot to Asia and Middle East.

NATO braces for a 10-20K reduction, with no U.S. details, risking uncoordinated withdrawals. As Russia’s 1.5M army looms, Europe’s underfunded militaries scramble to fill gaps, exposing NATO’s reliance on U.S. might.

This shift, amid Trump’s “America First” push, weakens EU and forces it to increase remilitarization, following EU's aggressive rhetoric towards Russia, and autocratic behaviour.

The IRS has officially allowed churches in the U.S. to endorse political candidates before their congregations without risking their tax-exempt status.

This decision came after a legal settlement with two Texas churches and a Christian broadcasters group, and applies specifically to religious organizations, not all nonprofits.

The move could significantly increase political activity in churches, potentially changing the landscape of religious influence in American politics.

Europe plans 50,000-strong Multinational Force Ukraine, with HQ in Paris, then London.

Up to 30 nations, excluding U.S., will aid Kyiv’s military, logistics, and Black Sea/airspace security post-ceasefire. Macron and Starmer push rapid deployment to deter Russia’s army.

Trump’s envoy Kellogg and Senators Graham and Blumenthal signal U.S. sanctions support, but no troops. With EU’s $19B aid gap and U.S. freeze, this risks escalating tensions while Ukraine’s defenses falter.

European countries have given Iran a deadline: if Tehran does not take concrete steps to contain its nuclear programme by August 29, the process of reinstating UN sanctions will begin.

The UK, France, and Germany warn that embargos on arms, banking, and nuclear technology—lifted a decade ago—could soon return. Their goal is to pressure Iran into allowing the UN nuclear inspectorate back, especially after damage from recent US strikes in June.

If triggered, the “snapback” sanctions mechanism cannot be vetoed by China, Russia, or even the US. The result would be reinstating strict UN resolutions, including severe limits on uranium enrichment and the international transfer of sensitive technologies.

This move signals Europe’s intent to reassert influence over the Iranian nuclear file. But it also risks ending Europe’s role as mediator, potentially escalating tensions and making a diplomatic solution even more remote.

Chinese-linked hacking groups have intensified their cyber attacks on Taiwan’s semiconductor sector, focusing on both chip makers and investment analysts.

Proofpoint analysts say at least three China-aligned groups orchestrated espionage campaigns between March and June, exploiting phishing and compromised accounts. The attacks come as U.S. chip export restrictions to China become more severe, pressuring China’s tech industry to close the gap.

The coordinated nature and rising frequency of these attacks highlight the growing strategic importance of Taiwan’s semiconductor ecosystem—not just for regional markets, but for global technological and security competition.

Washington State Dems pass HB 1113, allowing courts to dismiss charges for drug possession, theft, assault, and DUI.

Critics like Rep. Graham (R-Spokane) argue it fuels crime, with auto thefts up 150% since 2021 pursuit laws. Supporters claim it eases overcrowded jails.

Amid rising public safety concerns, this risks backlash as lenient policies clash with calls for tougher enforcement.

The first batch of Australian Abrams tanks has arrived in Ukraine, bolstering Kyiv’s defenses.

Australia previously pledged 49 Abrams tanks worth $245 million to Ukraine last October. With most of the tanks delivered and more to come, Defence Minister Richard Marles reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, alongside additional aid such as the planned deployment of a Wedgetail aircraft to Europe for securing humanitarian corridors.

Amid record-high casualties from Russian missile and drone strikes, Australia joins over two dozen nations negotiating security agreements with Ukraine, focusing on military cooperation and future reconstruction incentives.

Clashes have reignited in southern Syria between Druze militias and Bedouin tribal forces, following the release of a video allegedly showing Druze fighters executing Bedouin civilians.

On the night of July 17–18, Bedouin units from Deir ez-Zor, Hasakah, and other regions launched a coordinated offensive into Suwayda province, seizing key locations like Al-Mazraa, Walgha, and the Al-Saala airbase. These gains position them for a potential push toward the city of Suwayda itself.

Druze forces have pulled back to establish defensive lines closer to the urban center. Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation is deteriorating rapidly, with residents reporting shortages of water, medicine, and food.

Despite early rural advances, urban combat remains a major obstacle for the Bedouin side. Suwayda's dense construction and mountainous terrain complicate direct assaults, especially given the attackers' lack of heavy equipment.

Cambodia’s PM Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting PM Phumtham Wechayachai will meet in Kuala Lumpur Monday to resolve border conflict.

Malaysia’s FM Mohamad Hasan says both nations trust ASEAN chair Malaysia as mediator, rejecting other countries’ involvement.

After 33 deaths and 200K displaced, Trump’s trade threats pushed the ceasefire. But with Thailand’s F-16 strikes and Cambodia’s BM-21 rockets, deep mistrust risks derailing talks.Malaysia’s mediation follows failed bilateral talks and Thailand’s rejection of US/China offers.

The Emerald Triangle dispute, rooted in 1907 Franco-Siamese treaties, flared after May’s skirmish.

With Cambodia’s China ties and Thailand’s US-aligned military, geopolitical splits complicate peace. Protests in Thailand and Hun Sen’s “war crime” claims signal fragile trust as ASEAN pushes for calm amid Trump’s 36% tariff threat.
