# भारतातील रेल्वे वाहतुकीचा इतिहास
1. भारतात रेल्वे वाहतुकीचा प्रथम आराखडा इ.स. १८३२ सालीच मांडण्यात आला होता.
2. भारतातील पहिली रेल्वे इ.स. १८३७ मध्ये रेड हिल्स चिंतड्रिपेट पुलावरून चिंतड्रिपेट पुलावरून धावली. तिला रेड हिल रेल्वे असे नाव देण्यात आले आणि विल्यम एवरीने उत्पादित रोटरी स्टीम लोकोमोटिव्हचा वापर केला. हे रेल्वे सर आर्थर कॉटन बांधले होते आणि मुख्यत्वे मद्रास मधील रस्ते-बांधकाम कामासाठी ग्रेनाइट दगडांचे परिवहन करण्यासाठी वापरले जात असे.
3. इ.स. १८४४ साली, भारताचे त्यावेळचे गव्हर्नर जनरल लॉर्ड हार्डिंग यांनी खाजगी व्यावसायिक मंडळीना रेल्वे व्यवस्था चालू करण्यासाठी परवानगी दिली. दोन नवीन रेल्वे कंपन्यांची स्थापना करण्यात आली आणि ब्रिटिश ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनीला त्यांना मदत करण्यासाठी सांगण्यात आले.
4. १८४५ मध्ये कॉटन राजहमुंदरी मधील डॉलेश्वरम येथे गोदावरी बांध बांधकाम बांधला, गोदावरी वर बांध बांधण्यासाठी दगड पुरवतो. पुढील काही वर्षात, इंग्लंडमधील गुंतवणूकदारांनी दाखवलेल्या व्यावसायिक औत्सुक्याचा भारताची रेल्वे व्यवस्था वृद्धिंगत होण्यात हातभार लागला.
5. १८५१मध्ये सोलानी ॲक्वाडक्ट रेल्वे रुरकीमध्ये बांधण्यात आली, ज्याला ब्रिटिश अधिकारी नंतर नाव "थॉमसन" नावाच्या स्टीम लोकोमोटिव्हने आणले. सोलनी नदीवर ॲक्क्वाडक्ट बांधकाम साहित्याचा वापर करण्यासाठी हे वापरण्यात आले होते.
6. १८ एप्रिल इ.स. १८५३ रोजी भारतातील पहिली प्रवासी रेल्वेगाडी बोरीबंदर (नंतरचे व्हिक्टोरिया टर्मिनस, व आताचे छत्रपती शिवाजी टर्मिनस) मुंबई ते ठाणे अशी ३४ किलोमीटर (२१ मैल) धावली. # "साहिब, सिंध आणि सुलतान" अशी नावे असलेल्या तीन वाफेच्या इंजिनांनी त्या गाडीला खेचले होते, आणि भारतातील रेल्वे वाहतूकीला औपचारिक सुरुवात झाली.
7. १८५४मध्ये बंगाल मध्ये हावडा ते हुगळी हे २४ मैलांचे अंतर कापणारी गाडी सुरू झाली. कोलकाता ते अलाहाबाद दिल्ली असा लोहमार्गही १८६४ मध्ये पूर्ण केला गेला.
8. मुंबई ते कोलकाता हा ६४०० किलोमीटरचा रेल्वेमार्ग पूर्ण झाला १८७०मध्ये त्यावरून गाडी धावली.
9. १८८५मध्ये भारतीय बनावटीचे रेल्वे इंजिन बनवण्याची सुरुवात झाली. इ.स. १९४७पर्यंत भारतात ४२ रेल्वे कंपन्या होत्या. इ.स. १९५१मध्ये या सर्व संस्थांचे राष्ट्रीयीकरण करून एक संस्था बनवण्यात आली.
