Privacy Checkup | A Telegram Setting Can Give People Your Exact Location

🤙🗺🧐

Didya know @Telegram just became the most downloaded mobile app in the world?

Its pretty crazy to see this kind of growth from a platform. Pavel Durov, one of Telegram's Product Managers attributes their success to a commitment with privacy.

"You – our users – have been and will always be our only priority. Unlike other popular apps, Telegram doesn’t have shareholders or advertisers to report to. We don’t do deals with marketers, data miners or government agencies. Since the day we launched in August 2013 we haven’t disclosed a single byte of our users' private data to third parties."

Well if that doesn't give me the warm & fuzzies inside. You can take Pavel at his word, but that doesn't stop the huge influx of scammers alongside the new users.

If you're unaware of your privacy settings, Telegram's feature 'richness' can turn into feature 'risks', kid. (sorry, I had to)

Let's run through the privacy checkup:

1. Is your nearby users setting on?

Well if it is - turn it off immediately. Not only will it enable random people to message you out of the blue (as the women in my family can attest to), but it can be used to find your exact location.

First reported in early January by Ahmed, the exploit works by using Telegram's nearby location feature to find the distance of your target user from a triangle of points. You can either walk around and do the measurements yourself, or use a GPS spoofer to make the process quicker. This is not unlike phone tower triangulation by law enforcement.

This feature is off by default, but even if you're feeling adventurous, I'd keep it off - you could give away your home address. (and there are never any cuties around anyways)

2. Are you sharing your phone number with everyone?

Its not uncommon to meet people on Telegram, and after some friendly back and forth you might add them as a contact. But be careful, there's a checkbox allowing you to share your number - essentially giving away your identity through a reverse phone number search.

Go to your privacy settings and select 'nobody' for 'Who can see my phone number'. Note that if someone out in the world knows your registered phone number already, they're able to find you on Telegram by searching your phone number.

In the future, I'll share ways to get anonymous & disposable phone numbers

3. Can anyone add you to their group?

By default, anyone can invite you to a group, which makes it so you automatically join a group and start receiving messages. We've seen swaths of new crypto scams, fake local marketplace groups, and fake food delivery groups take advantage of this. They have bots (or people) which go in and invite anyone they can to their groups.

To fix this go into privacy settings and click 'Group Invite' settings, then select 'My contacts' for 'Who can add me to groups and channels'.

Now, only your Uncle Lester can invite you to his yard sale... 🙄 - and there's no way to turn that off.

If this even protects one person, I'll be happy I wrote it.

Stay warm & safe,

🤙🗺🧐

Do you have a garden? Foraging/hunting skills? What about a food security plan and a well-stocked pantry? While your local grocery store may be full NOW, that doesn't mean shelves will always be that way, OR still be affordable as the current prices. Always good to prepare. Stay safe friends!

Questions & Inconsistencies to ask of others:

Evidence Of A Pandemic? If there really is a pandemic, then…

Why have we not seen anyone, anywhere else, ever, ever, ever fall on their face on the streets as we did in those early Wuhan videos if it’s the same virus? Where are all those other videos?

why is there not a constant wail of ambulance sirens throughout the day?

why are all the undertaker's saying that business is either normal or less than usual?

why don't we see long queues of people at cemeteries in crematoriums burying their loved ones?

why do we see things as pandemonium in the hospitals on TV, when in reality, they are empty of people?

why are the thousands of nurses out the work?

and it started in 2019, then how did all the governments around the world order and deliver Covid-19 PCR test kits the year before, in 2018?

why do we see thousands of used and discarded masks (which could be highly contagious) littering the streets and countryside? Where are all of the biohazard bins?

why do the rules and regulations differ greatly from city to city and country to country?

Why did states prevents people from buying seeds for their gardens but allow you to purchase lottery tickets?

Why aren’t doctors and nurses required to quarantine after being around all those infections flying around?

Why are there not dead homeless everywhere? They have no masks, no social distancing, no healthcare, no isolation, no quarantining, they don't wash themselves often, let alone you know live in, or have access to a sterile environment.

Why were they releasing people from prison due to COVID-19 but those who refuse to wear a mask were threatened with $1000 fines and 90 days in jail? If shelter in place and masks work, why did they release prisoners? Why did New Jersey arrest a man for working out in a gym while releasing seven sex offenders from jail if their intention is to keep us safe?

How is it that this virus can live for two days on Amazon boxes, and you must wait 48 hours to touch them but It can't survive on Dunkin Donuts coffee cups, so enjoying a hot cup of joe is safe? How does it live on basketballs, baseball bats and ballet bars, but dies on WWE ropes and Walmart shopping carts? How is it spread by hair stylists, dog groomers, and dentists, but not by bank tellers, cashiers, and fast food workers?

Why are politicians bankrupting restaurants limiting them to only 25% capacity, spaced out, while they allow airlines to tightly pack people together for hours?

Why don’t grocery store clerks pack the grocery bags anymore? They will say, ‘because of covid 19 to reduce the spread of catching or spreading the virus’. But a shelf packer took it out of a box and put on the shelf, a few customers might of picked it up and put back deciding they don’t want it, you put it in your cart then on the conveyer belt, and they they pick it up to scan it.. But putting it in a bag after you scan is risky?

Why, at a drive-thru do the servers holds a tray out the window with a bag of food for you to grab? They will say, “so I don’t touch your food because of Covid.” But didn’t the cook touch my food? Didn’t the person wrapping my food touch it and then touch it again when placing it in my bag? Didn’t you touch the bag and put it on the tray? Didn’t you touch the tray?

Why do they ask you to sit six feet away from each other at restaurants when there are fans blowing above the table? Is that the air-conditioning I feel? Is the air circulating in here?

Why are we not allowed to go to the beach (outside) but going to Walmart (indoors) is okay?

If Covid doesn't affect children, and they are not considered likely vectors for transmission, then why are the schools shut? If kids ages 1-4 years old are twenty times more likely to die from the flu than Covid, then why haven’t we been shutting down daycares and elementary schools every flu season.

Why is it okay to go to a bar in Metro Vancouver with five members of your household and fill your belly with booze until 10 p.m. without wearing masks, but you're out of luck if you want to put on a mask, sit physically distanced in a sterilized Vancouver arts venue, and see the world premiere of a solo or two-person dance performance or play? They said "You CANNOT invite your family into your home". Then they told us to meet them in the pub for a cheap meal. Could it be because the sale of alcohol—which generates big money for the province—takes precedence over much safer arts and cultural events that nourish our souls and provide much-needed income to some of our community's brightest lights? Why is it that, you are not allowed to stand and drink at the pub you have to sit down but at the shopping centre you are not allowed to sit down, all the chairs are roped off.

Protests: Instead of cancelling all the Fests this summer… Could we simply call them protests with food and live music… Then thousands can come and its perfectly fine? As Tyson Williams posted: “I’m having a protest in my backyard. We will be grilling and arguing and having a good time. Bring your own topic that you’re mad about” Why were we forbade from opening our businesses, arrested and summoned you for daring to protest the lockdowns, our children denied of their graduations and proms, allowed NO wakes or funerals for our loved ones, no going to church, no wedding plans and vacations but massive #BlackLivesMatter protests across the country were celebrated by the same people? And going to Walmart and big box stores is still totally okay? So, we should close our businesses and stay indoors - unless it’s to protest (for the right causes)? Why is there a dual message, “If you protest the lockdown you hate old people” but also, “If you don’t protest you hate black people”? How do you make sense of health experts supporting anti-police protest and saying, “As public health advocates, we do not condemn these gatherings as risking for COVID-19 transmission… This should not be confused with a permissive stance on all gatherings, particularly protests against stay-home orders.” Why the abrupt reversal from so many media outlets in suggesting that social justice (as they define it) matters more than social distancing? How can Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promote social distancing and then attend these protests himself? How could the media call Trump’s Tulsa Rally ‘Extraordinarily Dangerous Move’ in the face of this research from Forbes showing that these mass gatherings did not cause spikes? How could De Blasio orders gates welded shut at a Jewish Park while approving mass BLM gatherings? How do you make sense of these two headlines, “Oklahoma reports highest ever daily COVID-19 cases after Trump Tulsa Rally” but also “No Evidence” Black lives matter protests caused COVID-19 Spike: Study”? Why were Michigan, non-violent, armed protesters wanting freedom from lockdown is deemed as “dangerous white-privilege” whereas Seattle barricaded and violent armed protesters demanding lockdown is deemed as being “woke”? How can Contra Costa County issue stay at Home Orders that state: Social outdoor gatherings of up to 12 people but protests of up to 100 people?

Why do people question the profit motives of people like Joseph Mercola but not Bill Gates or Big Pharma?

How can it be that first they say ‘we must protect vulnerable old people from infection - even from asymptomatic carriers’ on the other hand, in the UK, they took old people out of hospitals (where they were for a reason) and put them into care homes where they died? To ‘save’ the old people, they killed them? The risk of dying of covid for them was low? The chance of dying without medical support was high? And why were so many of them made to sign Do Not Resuscitate Orders if they cared so much about old people?
