من خلال التعبير عن أنفسنا عبر اللغة، نفقد جزءًا من ذاتنا الحقيقية التي تسبق اللغة، وهو ما يسميه لاكان بالجزء "الحقيقي"، وهو مجال من التجربة غير الوسيطة التي لا يمكن للغة أن تحيط بها بشكل كامل.
لذلك، عندما نحدد أنفسنا في اللغة، نقوم بذلك من خلال تحويل أنفسنا إلى شيء يمكن للآخرين فهمه والتواصل معه. وفي هذه العملية، نفقد الفورية والشمولية لوجودنا السابق للغة، لنصبح أشبه بشيء يُعرَّف بواسطة النظام الرمزي للغة
