Engineering Fact

The word “engineer” comes from the medieval Latin word “ingeniator,” which comes from “ingeniare” meaning clever; native talent. It sounds like the original engineers were known for their creative cleverness and ingenuity.

Term of the day: Diffusion

Definition: Is the net movement of molecules or atoms from a region of higher concentration (or high chemical potential) to a region of lower concentration (or low chemical potential).

تُركز الفيزياء الذرية بشكلٍ رئيسيّ على الإلكترونات التي تدور حول نواة الذرة. في هذا المجال، يُهيمِن تفاعل كولوم ويمكن تفسير الظواهر عن طريق كهروديناميكا الكم (QED). من ناحية أُخرى، تهتم الفيزياء النووية بجسيمات النواة تُسمى النيوكليونات (البروتونات والنيوترونات). يوجد في النواة تنافُر كولوم بين البروتونات ولكن هناك أيضًا القوة الشديدة التي تحافظ على تماسك النواة. لم يتم فهم هذا التفاعل بشكلٍ كامل ولكن هناك العديد من النماذج لمعالجته. النظرية الرائدة في النواة هي الديناميكا اللونية الكمومية (QCD) التي تحاول شرح الظواهر من حيث الكواركات وهي الجسيمات التي يُقترح أنها تشكل النيوكليونات.
