لإكتشافها الراديوم والبولونيوم، وعملها على الإنحلال الإشعاعي radioactivity، حازت على جائزتي نوبل في الفيزياء والكيمياء. وبذلك، أصبحت أوَّل امرأة تفوز بجائزة نوبل والوحيدة حتَّى الآن التي حصلت على جائزتي نوبل في تخصصين مختلفين.
تقول ماري كوري:

Despite being faced with brutal sexism that accompanied her fame as a female scientist Marie Curie is remembered for her discovery of radium and polonium, and her huge contribution to finding treatments for cancer.
