The bible was based on Sumerian tablets but remixed. And how the hebrew words relate to it even though it’s a diff language. It talks about God(s) but most Christians havent even heard of Sumerian.
1. What the clay tablets are.
Long before the Bible—or even the alphabet—people living in Sumer (southern Iraq) pressed wedge-shaped signs into wet clay. These tablets, some going back over 5,000 years, give us the first written myths about how the world began, how humans were made, why a great flood came, and how a whole roster of gods ran the universe like a committee.
2. How those stories resurface in Genesis.
When Jewish scribes were exiled to Babylon in the 6th century BCE they found libraries full of those older tales. Instead of copying them word-for-word, they retold them with a single moral God at the center. So:
• The Sumerian “sea of chaos” goddess Tiamat becomes the dark “deep” (tehōm) in Genesis 1.
• The clay-people made to do the gods’ chores become Adam shaped from dust.
• The flood hero Ziusudra/Atrahasis riding out a week-long storm becomes Noah riding out 40 + 40 days.
3. Why “God” sometimes looks plural.
The Hebrew word most English Bibles render as “God” is ’Elohim—a grammatically plural noun. Early verses even say, “Let us make humankind in our image.” Scholars see this as leftover plumbing from the older, many-gods universe. Later editors kept the word but paired it with singular verbs and a singular viewpoint, turning the old divine council into one supreme voice.
4. What that means in a sentence.
If the Bible feels as though it’s echoing earlier myths, that’s because it is: the authors took the best-known Mesopotamian wisdom of their day and recast it to preach one just, ethical deity instead of a squabbling pantheon. The plural hints that peek through—like ’Elohim—are fingerprints of that deeper Sumerian layer.
5. Why it matters.
Seeing the continuity doesn’t “debunk” either text; it simply shows how human cultures recycle and remix big ideas.
