Look at Gaming #405 | 10.15.2024
GM! Welcome back! The biggest news in web3 is obviously Off The Grid.
This is a moment for web3 games. Gunzilla did the industry a huge favor by subsidizing a lot of the awareness cost (and maybe even user acquisition cost). Now there's an example, a real case study.
The biggest streamers in web2 were fully engaged in the game. We had TimTheTatMan to the crowd favorite Ninja. Initially the streamers were paid to stream but I heard that after a certain point their contracts expired and are now streaming on their own.
There was a comment from Shroud that called out blockchain tech and how game studios don't have to spend millions to build a whole asset marketplace and should just use a blockchain.
But this is literally just the beginning. I remember back in 2020 when Ubisoft released their battle royale game called Hyperscape then two years later they closed it down. There was also Apex Legends Mobile that went down within the same year of launch. Obviously these games failed because of their own reasons but the trend is that Battle Royale is a hard genre to have staying power.
In other news, we had the Hidenburg moment for Roblox. As a research firm under the same nomenclature released a scathing report that Roblox had inflated their numbers by almost 2x in its public filings. Roblox came out disputing these claims. Unsure if Hidenburg Research's short position is still open but $RBLX started the month at $43.53 then dropped as low as $40.51 (7% drop).
Speaking of publicly traded companies, InvestGame & GDEV released a report on the history of Gaming IPOs. 87 companies were analyzed with the first one being Nintendo back in 1962. Asia is the dominant region for IPO listings with 46% then Europe at 35% and US at 18%. As expected PC&Console were the dominant platforms up until 2011-2015 when the split became 50/50. The total capitalization of these companies grew from around $50B in 2000 to peak of $535B in 2020. Now we're at $365B, a 30% drawdown from the peak. There are 8 $1B+ companies in the west and 25 $1B+ companies in Asia.
Two blog posts that I liked are a16z Games' 5 GTM strategies and Deconstructor Of Fun's reporting on how Scopely went from $1B to $10B in 5 years.
That's it for this week! Chat y'all on the flipside.

Paradigm — Crypto gaming with Matt Huang & Dylan Field
If interested, please fill out the Form. We'll get back to you over the next few weeks.
Dylan Field (@zoink) and Matt Huang (@matthuang) have an idea for a Neopets-inspired crypto game, and we’re looking for 1-2 people to come build it with us.
We have fun ideas for crypto-native game mechanics, and crypto infra has improved to the point of enabling them.
Eg: High throughput and low cost L2s or app chains, better onboarding (Privy embedded wallets, Odyssey experiment-001), anti-sybil mechanisms (zkpassport, Worldcoin), NFT minting mechanisms (such as VRGDAs), and NFT-fi (marketplaces, lending, etc).
We’re excited for what this could unlock for crypto gaming.
If interested, please fill out the Form. We'll get back to you over the next few weeks.

Look at Gaming #325 | 11.03.2023
GM! Late post for the week got one post from Deconstructor Of Fun that I want to call out.
In web3, we have 69 shooter games but is there still a market for them? DoF gave us an overview of the shooter genre landscape and it's pretty lethal out there.
The market isn't growing. NewZoo data shows that MAU basis for PvP shooter been in decline since 2021 -- decreased from 80M to 50M in 2024. Normalizing the data for the Covid-Pump, a 40% drop is still much higher than 28%.
There is no space at the top. 80% of playtime is dominated by six PvP FPS shooters. New entrants have little stayingpower -- see XDefiant and The Finals fell to 20% of their peak numbers.
Pretty bad picture so how would new web3 entrants survive? The author of the piece identified three elements: Differentiation, Live-Service Strategy, Content Productivity.
1. Differentiation -- can't be just slight tweaks to mechanics like The FInals' ability to destroy everything. Think back to Fortnite combining TPS with crafting. This novel combo introduced new mastery curves and the gameplay permutation.
2. Live-Service Strategy -- just ship more content (LOL!)
3. Content Productivity -- create more game modes or live events with existing content/assets. Be creative (LOL!)
Granted the suggestions at the end weren't great but at least the data was helpful to see the state of the shooters market.

• Basic "clicker" mechanics will evolve into different types of async multiplayer part-style game experiences given the natural social network in the ecosystem
• Publishers will roll out a portfolio of game offerings for various audiences to keep players in their ecosystem
• Big games won't rely on crypto airdrops alone to grow their user base (but will always be a winning acquisition strategy to add to the mix)
• Discovery, cross-promo & advertising ecosystem within Telegram will improve and expand
• These games will be easily ported to other places like Discord, WeChat, LINE or Web due to being developed with web technologies allowing developers to grow their games outside the App Store
