With the MSFT vs. FTC pretty over, I wanted to take a look at the franchise that was the crux of the whole case. Call of Duty was first released two decades ago in 2003 on PC and console. But it only came on mobile in 2019.

In Activision's Q2 2023 financials, the company stated that more than half of all engagement happens on mobile — totalling to $3B in lifetime revenue. This is incredible for a game that was predominantly on PC and console.

It only took 3 years for the engagement to flip sides. Can Activision Blizzard execute their mobile strategy with other titles like Overwatch?

This also speaks to the evolution of mobile players. The core genre is becoming more prevalent in mobile and that's a good thing.

gm. Let's start the week off with a bang.

Here's a look at our essay on how we're thinking about Digital Marketing 3.0. UA costs are up 2x and brands are hurting.

We covered things from branded in-game experiences on Roblox all the way to Starbucks' Odyssey Loyalty Program.

Read it HERE.

____________

TL;DR — Brands are struggling to maintain engagement while sustaining return on advertising spend.

But there are alternatives advertising avenues on the horizon.

In this article we explore these techniques that may transform the relationship between customers and brands, which can increase brand awareness, engagement and customer lifetime value (LTV).

Aside from TikTok, Roblox is another ad platform that you must know. Why is it important? Nearly half of kids age 13 and under in the US plays Roblox — that's 61M DAU.

Roblox launched their Immersive Ads product back in March 2023. This allows creators to insert specific areas in their games that facilitates PROGRAMMATIC ad placements.

There are two types of Immersive Ads. (1) A static billboard, (2) A billboard that transports you to another game.

NOTE. You can NOT divert users off Roblox — so no URLs, QR codes, etc.

Roblox is openning that up to outside partners. Folks like Vayner3 (Gary Vee's outfit), Dentsu (Japanese Ad & PR company). Prepare to see a deluge of brands flooding into this ad platform. There are numerous stringent issues with targeting and advertising to kids. If Roblox could crack the regulatory code, then it's going to be a dominant player in the ads space.

Man! I guess this week is just filled with ad-related topics. If you missed our piece on Digital Marketing 3.0. Read it HERE. Yesterday we talked about Roblox's ad network and how that's going to change the game — apologies for the cringey cliché. Now a report from GameAnalytics shows USA game ad revenue hit $130B by 2025.

But that's only 6% of the advertising spend in the USA. Brands are still undervaluing the potential of ads in the gaming space. Also that 50% of all ad revenue from within the gaming industry comes from within the gaming industry itself, talk about dogfooding ourselves.

There are quite a few interesting data points in the report so check out the link in the Spotlight section. Promise you'll learn something!

Venmo is a popular payment app in the US that facilitated over $244B in 2022 with over 75M users. Its reported that the avg payment on the app is $60. Sounds like its just the right amount to buy a game.

Xbox integrated with Venmo. This is just another step forward since Microsoft already has a relationship with Paypal. Players can use their venmo account to pay for games, Xbox subscriptions, and of course pay one another. The last part I think is interesting.

Depending on how well integrated Venmo is to the platform, I can imagine some player2player payment action happening. "$5 for first blood," said by my teammate to the left as we spawn into our CoD game. Fun.

Happy Friday everyone! Hope you guys got fun plans for the weekend.

Today we're taking a break from all the ads-related topic and talk about the casual mobile games. It's been all the rage to talk about hybridcasual as hypercasual fell out of favor. Though there might be a resurgence of casual games.

Five Categories of Mobile Games:
Hypercasual > Hybrid > Casual > Mid-Core > Core

Hypercasuals are the play-once-throw-away type of experiences then the Hybridcasual are pretty much the same except there's a progression system — think Archero. In the middle we have Casual games are the match-3 games such as Candy Crush Saga.

Hypercasual became all the rage as the mobile advertising grew in popularity. Studios like Voodoo would ship dozens of these games each year and load em up with UA and monetize with ads only.

Surprisingly the retention rate for Hypercasual and Casual games are similar. But unsurprisingly the session length for Casual games are nearly 2x that of Hypercasual. In terms of monetization, ARPU for Casual games varies widely from $4 to $49, whereas Hypercasual has a tighter range of $4 - $11.

To learn more check out the article in the Spotlight section today. It provides a pretty good highlevel taxonomy of the mobile space and an in-depth look at differences between the two genres.

GM. Welcome to Week 31 of the year — time is flyin' by.

Fun fact to start your week. 2 out of 3 people in China plays video games. 🧐

A report from the China Audio-Video And Digital Publishing Association (CADPA) stated that China's gamer base hit a new ATH with 668M players — that's 2x the population of the USA. But revenue of $20B in H1 2023 is 2% lower YoY. A full report is scheduled to be released after the ChinaJoy conference.

I went over to AppMagic to see what the mobile game market structure looks like and unsurprisingly Tencent and NetEase dominated. Out of the Top 10 Mobile Game Publishers, Tencent and NetEase comprise of 80% of the revenues and
92% of the downloads so far in 2023.

Shoutout to miHoYo Games for being the third largest publisher in China with less than 2% of the quantity of mobile apps that Tencent and NetEase has.

Apple coming in hot with that user protection. They will start asking developers to justify WHY certain APIs are used. This new category of API is called "Required Reasons APIs" aka the final nail the coffin for fingerprinting.

These APIs include disk space APIs, active keyboard APIs, user default APIs, system boot time APIs, and file timestamp APIs. This is a living list so things will change.

The policy will be softly implemented starting Fall 2023 then by Spring 2024 Apple will outright reject applications that do not comply.

This means that User Acquisition (UA) will become even more challenging. More importantly, recall that the EU allowed side loading and new app stores next year. These privacy practices may carry over to other upcoming app stores like those of Meta's and Microsoft's when they do launch next year in the EU. So UA will be difficult no matter what platform you end up choosing.

Two interesting articles that I wanted to point out. The first article talked about a new way to monetize and the second one mentioned that mobile games make up 30% of all subscription-based apps.

It's no secret that monetization is tougher than ever and the subscription model is getting crowded. The number of mobile games with subscriptions tripled since 2022.

I learned of Amazon Anywhere today. It basically allows players to shop on Amazon while still remains in the game. Pretty cool, slightly disrupts the immersion but there were some success with Niantic's AR pet game, Peridot.

GM! It's Monday.

I'm kicking the week off with a look at Nintendo's mobile game efforts. Since 2016, they've earned $1.5B across six games — but two were cancelled.

There's a clear graph in the article showing Nintendo's monthly earnings and it peaked in about November 2019 (at $40M) and has been in steady decline down to $8M in July 2023.

The top three Nintendo games make up lion share of their mobile revenue. Fire Emblem Heroes pulled in $810M from 13.3M downloads. Mario Kart Tour rakes in $243M with 230M downloads. Animal Crossing is slightly under at $240M and 60M downloads.

The other mobile games aren't updated regularly and it's obvious since it's unprofitable. Super Mario Run only makes $250k per month.

But earlier this year Nintendo announced that it's partnering up with DeNA which is a mobile publisher powerhouse with over 197 games of which 10 games pulled in more than $50M in lifetime revenue. And DeNA's monetization is next level — $18 per download.

Look at Gaming #269 | Tuesday August 8th 2023

GM! It's Tuesday.

A little light on the news today. Except that Valve just sent a notice to DotA 2 Custom Game creators to halt all monetization.

DotA 2 Custom Games are essentially game mods which was also how Dota itself got started. The most popular game is called Overthrow which is effectively the Team Death Match equivalent in CoD — high adrenaline and action packed. Another good one is 10v10 Dota2. As the name suggests, it's just the standard play mode but 2x the heroes 2x the fun. But these are created by Valve, not the community.

DotA Auto Chess is a game that originated from the community and pleasantly surprised the whole industry. This game mode was awesome. Then obvious Valve does what Valve do and created a clone called DotA Underlords. So Valve's move to stop all monetization would definitely hinder modding innovations.

This is important to note because many platforms are heading towards this UGC-platform route — think UEFN (Fortnite Islands), Fall Guys, Halo, Destiny. So all creators need to be cognizant of the terms and conditions of the platform they're building on.

Look at Gaming #268 | Wednesday August 9th 2023

GM! It's Wednesday.

A long docket of news today so I'm just going to do a speedrun through them for you.

Netflix has a new mobile app for a virtual controller — hinting at a possible TV cross-play? Remember that Netflix has been hiring all-star gaming talent and have been publishing mobile games using their IPs. But no console or core game yet.

H1 Gaming Revenue in China dropped by 2.4% at $20B USD. Take-Two CEO says game films are uneconomical but their company's growth slowed after Zynga acquisition, been almost 1.5 years now. Sony's Game & Network Services sales up 27% ($5.4B) — 56.5M copies of games sold with 12% first-party games and 88% third-party games.

Genies is helping celebrities add AI into their digital avatars. I think this offers a whole dimension to a celebrity's reach and productivity. Though I'm concerned about the liabilities that an AI avatar may lead to — could a celebrity be liable for the actions or words of their avatar?

Look at Gaming #271 | Thursday August 10th 2023

GM! It's Thursday.

I got some China-related news for you. First, the government is expanding its game licensing system to apply to ALL applications. That's right, now any mobile application that wants to launch in China would have to go through review by the government. Recall that earlier this year, China instituted a blanket pause on all mobile game applications — imagine that your mobile app is fully ready to launch then Beijing just rugs you.

In other news, ChinaJoy is one of the largest gaming conventions. It's been running for 20 years and the good folks over at Niko Partners, who actually attended the inaugural event in 2003, gave us a debrief on the happenings. Three major trends were Gen AI, Expanding Overseas, and Government Support.
